Swim
Comments: LOTS of bumping - got kicked in the chin right at the start. Was very congested for first 1/3 of course. In all the frenzy at the start, I started off breathing to my weak side - finally realized it after the first buoy. Switched sides and was a lot more comfortable and fast. What would you do differently?: Get into a better rhythm on my strong side sooner. Push a little harder - could have gone faster. Transition 1
Comments: Only hang up here was getting my jersey on - because I was wet, it rolled up on me - cost me a couple seconds. What would you do differently?: Practice putting it on wet. I practiced it dry and thought I had it down. Bike
Comments: Stayed with two fast riders from T1 through about mile 4. Started feeling tight in the chest, so I backed off a bit. Was worried I'd get thirsty (wasn't carrying water) but it wasn't a problem b/c of the cool weather (& hydrating well all day). Had a pretty good ride until the final turn into T2 - was a sharp turn. Rider ahead of me slowed to unstrap his shoes; I didn't have enough room to pass, so I started unstrapping mine; my foot slipped and in the split second I looked down, the rider ahead had nearly stopped at the corner; I came up too fast on him and just slid on the wet pavement - started to bump into him, so rather than wreck him I bailed off my bike. Lost my shoe in the process, so I had to go back to grab it and then run about 75 yards to the dismount line. What would you do differently?: Take deeper breaths through whole bike portion. Take that final turn slower. Transition 2
Comments: Got to the race early so I had the best spot in T2. Well this race has a lot of beginners and they don't know they shouldn't pile their bikes all around someone else' gear. So after the first 4 waves did this, I had to move my stuff to the end of the transition area. Also, since my shoes were wet, they were harder to slip on. And I couldn't get my race belt strapped for a while. What would you do differently?: Pick an unpopular transition area so people don't put their bikes on top of my stuff. Practice with my race belt more. Make sure I take 2 seconds to make sure the tongues of my shoes are straight (was uncomfortable the whole run) Run
Comments: No side ache! That's a victory for me. First mile was not awesome - getting adjusted after bike. Second mile decided to push hard - wanted to go under 40 minutes. Finished pretty strong. What would you do differently?: Run the course ahead of time - get more familiar with landmarks so I could pace better. Do more training bricks so my body can transition quicker. Post race
Warm down: Talked w/ family. Got some food. Collected my stuff (minus my goggles, which someone stole - hopefully by accident). Got a short massage. What limited your ability to perform faster: Wet conditions. Crowded swim. Bad T2. Breathing on bike. Event comments: First time doing this race. Had a great time. Fun having lots of people there. Love that so many new people are giving tri a shot - and that this race promotes beginners. Wish the results had split & pace columns and an overall list - maybe that'll come later. Was different with an evening race... ate a light meal around 4:00. Got to race early & watched other waves. Couldn't set up T1 until 20 minutes before the race.
Did a lot of fast walking.
