Swim
Comments: First time swimming in some bigger waves during a tri- wasn't too bad, just had to adapt... it made the race more fun and interesting. There were two big start waves for the Intermediate distance, so it got a little more physical than the other races I've done so far due to the larger number of people. Interesting riding the waves/navigating them while trying to sight for the buoys. Swallowed a few gulps of cold salt water but no biggie. What would you do differently?: Swim harder earlier and run faster when I come out of the water- got passed by a girl on my way up the beach, agh! Distracted by trying to get off my wetsuit, cap, etc... then next thing I knew she was getting by me. Transition 1
Comments: They haven't posted the splits yet for the transitions. I know this one was slower than usual since the suit got stuck on my timing chip (it was a different ankle bracelet than usual- bigger). Also, my hands were so cold and numb from the swim I could not get them to move to fasten my bike shoes and eventually to shift into the big ring to get up to speed. Panicked/got frustrated for a second but within a minute or two of the ride got feeling back and was able to shift. What would you do differently?: Sprint up the beach and take off cap/goggles/suit top without slowing down. If cold maybe rub my hands together as I run to keep them from being numb. Bike
Comments: Had my best bike average ever (16.5). Rode on the drops the entire time, something I needed to get used to- happy with that. Also drank from the water bottle and had half a Hammer gel while riding- feeling more comfortable on the bike overall since the last race on June 20th. I could have been faster on the turns but was conservative. Road was bumpy and potholes at times. Saw two or three people with flats. Spun hard and fast the entire time and my legs were more spent than usual- longest bike race distance yet, and since it was flat, it was 100% pushing hard with no breaks for downhills or variation. Felt very good for the most part though. What would you do differently?: Keep getting more miles in on the bike. Focus on pulling up on the pedals more. Transition 2
Run
Comments: Legs were heavy at first but was able to loosen them up after about a mile. I know I can go faster than a 9 min/mi pace, so I just have to push myself in training runs and stop running so conservatively. What would you do differently?: Push harder. Practice speedwork while training and learn to feel comfortable with a faster, less conservative pace. Post race
Warm down: Walked a little, stretched. Went to the beach later that day, freezing water felt excellent on the legs. Event comments: Well-organized and exciting race overall. Nice scenery by the beach. Seemed to be a pretty strong field as well. I would do it again. Last updated: 2009-07-12 12:00 AM
