Swim
Comments: Considering this was my first triathlon, I wanted to make sure I was out of everyone's way in the swim. Although I ended up finishing ahead of a lot of people in my wave, which felt good. I was pretty dissapointed with the fact that I had to do about half freestyle and half breaststroke. I thought I had trained enought to be able to do it all with the freestyle stroke. Apparently not. Although, I would like to think that some of that was because I was not properly warmed up at all. What would you do differently?: Warm up and stretch more before the race. Train harder for the swim. Transition 1
Comments: Didn't seem like this transition took as long at apparently did. I got my socks and running shoes on fine, and helmet on fine, but then the sunglasses happened. The rubber end on the ear-piece fell off and I had to find that. Then I couldn't get them on face and through my helmet very smoothly. Looking back, I probably didn't even need them really. Also drank some water. What would you do differently?: Maybe not wear sunglasses? Practice the transition. Bike
Comments: I had some problems right out of the gate. First, I forgot to put my seat up to the right height after I took it out of the car! I sat down to ride and thought "Oh crap!" I quickly fixed that. Then, at the first turn around, I scraped a pedal on the ground and nearly wiped! This is all after that fantastic transition. Oh well, I didn't let it get to me, I just kept going. Kept a pretty easy pace, althought I was going pretty fast for me (and my mountain bike. Good thing I put road tires on it!). What would you do differently?: Get a nice bike designed for roads... Otherwise I thought I did pretty well. Transition 2
Comments: I had some problems racking my bike on this transition. But eventually got it on there no problem. I also had some water and took a gel for the run. What would you do differently?: Practice racking my bike more. Run
Comments: I thought the run went well. I ran at a pretty slow pace, but I wanted to finish the race without walking. I started to get a side stitch about half way through the run, but slowed down a bit and took some deep breaths and fought through it. At the end I turned it up a bit. Felt strong. Breathing not to labored. What would you do differently?: I would train a little more to build up my speed. Post race
Warm down: Not a whole lot. Walked around a bit, got some hugs from family. Should have done more. What limited your ability to perform faster: I wish I could have trained for twice as long (I only trained about eight weeks for it). I think that would have helped for sure. My clunky, heavy mountain bike. Event comments: For this being my first race, I came away with the impression that it was fairly well organized, and I had a great time. I met some really nice people during the day, which helped me with my nerves before the race started. Everything got started a little late, but that was ok. I didn't even really notice. Over all a great day and a great race. I can't wait to do another one! Last updated: 2005-08-28 12:00 AM

I woke up about 4:00 and had half a peanut butter sandwich and an energy bar. I double checked I had all my gear and tried to relax for a while as I was really nervous. I left at about 5:00 and got to the race site about 20 minutes later. At that point it was time to just follow the crowd because I had no idea what was supposed to happen. I got marked and racked my bike and set up my transition area.
Didn't really get too much of a warm up in. Too many bathroom breaks! Yikes! I was really nervous. I honestly don't remember how all the time flew by like it did. I know I went back down to my car once...oh well. Before the start of my wave I did jump in the water to get used to it and warm up a bit. Unfortunately it was about a half hour before my wave started, and didn't help too much I don't think. Next time I will definitely be doing at least a nice little jog with some stretching, and saving the swim for just a little bit before the race.
