Pat Griskus Triathlon Series
70F / 21C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 26m 15s
Overall Rank = 301/508
Age Group = 45_49
Age Group Rank = 27/34
Pre-race routine:

Ate Turkey Sandwich at 2pm. Got to the race by 3:30pm. Racked bike, got my bag & body marking. Put numbers on bike, helmet and race belt. Setup transition Area.
Event warmup:

Took 3 pre-race swims, about 200 yds each. Practiced sighting the bouys (horrible the first time).
Swim
  • 18m 50s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 08s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started way too far back. It was a nasty all the way out and most of the way back. Couldn't find any open water. Navigation was okay on the way out, on the way back i think i crossed the center lane and went all the way to the other side of the bouys for the wave the started on the other side.
What would you do differently?:

Start farther toward the front. I don't have enough confidence in my swim. I'm a much better swimmer than i think i am. There are a lot of people who don't swim very well.
Transition 1
  • 02m 19s
Comments:

Still have MTB shoes that tie, so shoes on first. It was very congested getting out of the transition area. Had to wait to get on my bike.
What would you do differently?:

Um, not much until i can get some new shoes that i can leave on my bike pedals.
Bike
  • 35m 38s
  • 10.5 miles
  • 17.68 mile/hr
Comments:

so, overall i placed 229 (up from 308 in the swim), but still the same basically for my age group ? Middle-aged guys must be good cyclists i guess.
What would you do differently?:

Not too much
Transition 2
  • 02m 3s
Comments:

knocked the bike in front of me off when i racked mine, so i had to put it back on the rack. Also, stopped to take a drink - maybe try to drink more toward the end of the bike next time so i can skip that.
Run
  • 27m 7s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 45s  min/mile
Comments:

Took it very easy, worried about bangin' on my hip. pushed a little harder on the way back up the hill. Had a lot left for the end of the race. Never gasping for air at all. Very comfortable run.
What would you do differently?:

Hopefully next time i'll be 100% and can push harder on the run. I was very happy to be able to complete the run w/o an pain.
Post race
Warm down:

Little stretching. Packed up the car, grabbed a burger and a hot dog which i ate on my way back to the car so that i could drive 40 minutes to pickup my daughter at her cheerleading practice (made it by 1 minute).

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lack of skill, talent, training. Being old, slow and injury prone.
Seriously, this was my first tri of the season and i've been battling an injury so i was very happy with my bodies ability not to fall apart. I just tried to relax during the swim, tho i did a poor job sighting, I pushed hard on the bike and took it easy durig the run. This is basically how i had planned it so I'd say everything pretty much went according to plan.

Event comments:

This was an incredibly well organized race. Tons of volunteers. I like that there was a bathroom facility instead of just a bunch of port-o-lets. The race director is fantastic. Numberous emails pre-race. Announced all the race instructions, waves, transition area info it seemed like every 15 minutes. I guess after 15 years (or was it 18?) they really have it down.

Course: Hilly. Out was mostly downhill, then a bunch of hills on the way back, none of the down ;). I think i did very well on the bike. It looks like i passed 70 riders on the course. I think i handled most of the hills well. There were some places where you just couldn't pass because of narrow roads and cars in both directions (a little frustrating). All-in-all i thought i did really well :)
