Sunset Racing
85F / 29C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 23m 28s
Overall Rank = 96/192
Age Group = 25-29
Age Group Rank = 17/25
Pre-race routine:

Slept at friend's nearby. Drove 10 minutes to the start, had to park on the street. Was easy for us cause we were there early but was probably a headache later. Insufficient amount of portajohns.
Event warmup:

Went swimming in the freezing, wavy water briefly. Race started 10 minutes late.
Swim
  • 29m 20s
  • 1760 yards
  • 01m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

Was very cold and very wavy. Current was pulling and pushing people. Had a little trouble finding my breath at first. Sighting was difficult. When I stood up at the end I got knocked over hard by a wave, as did many others. It was near jettys too which could have easily been bad news.
What would you do differently?:

I did about as well as I could - one of the hardest swims I ever did. Not enough buoys or lifeguards.
Transition 1
  • 01m 45s
Comments:

The transition marker was up near transition, not the beach, so it makes your swim longer than it really is. The volunteers had to answer 1,000 times where you went in and out of transition because they had no signs for it but it was a good open area on pavement.
What would you do differently?:

Get wetsuit off heals faster.
Bike
  • 1h 13m 56s
  • 21.6 miles
  • 17.53 mile/hr
Comments:

I'm not a strong biker so I was getting ripped here. The roads are good except where they meet at turns. Some relatively sharp turns. I can't emphasize enough the time-trial atmosphere of the course.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to use aerobars.
Transition 2
  • 01m 24s
Comments:

By the time I came back, they opened up the transition area for the sprint so it was a little confusing.
Run
  • 37m 6s
  • 5.05 miles
  • 07m 21s  min/mile
Comments:

Ran well.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Not much options. Did take ice from a bucket and put it in my suit.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

It got really hot and they didn't have enough water on the course.

Event comments:

This was the first year Sunset Racing did it and it was very good. In general the course was very good and fair and challenging, there were just a lot of smaller details that they need to work out.

Suit: full-length
Course: out, make left around a buoy, swim down parallel to shore, hairpin turn, back and right around first buoy. Not a good set-up at all. Insufficient buoys considering the waves made it very hard to see where you were going. Hairpin turn had to have crossed people up.

Course: Two-lap course. Only 156 feet of elevation change on the entire course. It's an absolute time-trial - there is no time to rest or relax, you have to absolutely spin the entire time. It goes up Ocean Avenue then around some neighborhoods back down again and then up again.

Course: 2-lap course. Down the boardwalk and back up, through Convention Hall. You have to get a bracelet on the way back before the 2nd lap - totally unnecessary if they had more timing mats. Many, many oblivious people on the boardwalk. They lied about the course distance - it didn't go as far down the boardwalk as the map showed. They only had water at the turnarounds, which was not enough and they weren't able to fill them up fast enough. Crowd control was poor.
