Age Group Rank = 12/
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5. Ate PB&J and drank water on drive down with Scot. Signed up for race once I got there, then set up transition area.
Event warmup:

Swam maybe 50 yards in lake.
Swim
  • 26m 40s
  • 1760 yards
  • 01m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

Veered off course a little heading toward first big buoy and nearly swam into a small buoy heading back to beach second time (was sighting off arch by that point) but otherwise good swim. Actually liked the double loop, as it made things seem more manageable.
What would you do differently?:

Sight better.
Transition 1
  • 04m 21s
Comments:

Probably could have gone a little faster -- sat down to take suit off. For once, didn't get shirt stuck putting it on. Took the time to eat a Gu before I left transition. Running over wood chips and through mud in bike shoes also slowed things down.
What would you do differently?:

Figure out how to take wetsuit off my heels faster. Save first Gu for bike.
Bike
  • 1h 26m 54s
  • 24 miles
  • 16.57 mile/hr
Comments:

Kept at a pretty good pace -- didn't push it too hard since this was a C or D or whatever race, and I wanted to have something left for the run. According to my bike computer, I averaged 16.9, not whatever it says up there. Dropped my chain once, and Kate B. passed me, and I never caught back up. Also stopped for half a second when the help truck was convinced my rear water bottle holder was coming off (it wasn't).

What would you do differently?:

Not drop my chain. Tighten screws on water bottle cage.

Probably could've done a little better job shifting. I couldn't decide in some spots whether to be in big or middle ring.
Transition 2
  • 01m 45s
Comments:

Quick transition. Even remembered to take off bike gloves. Took time to have a sip of Gatorade. Stopped in bathroom, since there were no porta-potties on course. (I think that technically counted as part of my run.)
What would you do differently?:

Not pee.
Run
  • 56m 34s
  • 6.45 miles
  • 08m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

Very muggy, so tried to focus on keeping heart rate down on hills. Walked very briefly at water stops. Kept a pretty even pace and heart rate.
What would you do differently?:

Probably could have pushed it a little harder early on.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed water bottle, found Scot, went to food tent.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Muggy weather slowed run slightly. Dropped chain took a little time and reduced my confidence shifting. Also, training the day before meant I didn't have as much energy in reserve.

Event comments:

Good race, but run distance was way off.

Course: Reverse loop of bike course. Relatively flat. Of course, slight inclines on bike felt like actual hills running. Pretty shady, which was nice. Did not particularly enjoy loop through camp, past fire smoke and around puddles, at beginning and end of course.
