Swim
Comments: Severly disappointed with my swim. I barely got out in the water when the horn sounded. All of the sudden, I forgot everything I knew about swimming!!! I couldn't get into any rhythm breathing. I spent over half the time on my back. I really need to get more swimming in, especially in open water with a current. What would you do differently?: More swimming in open water with current. Transition 1
Comments: Pretty good transition considering how tired out I was from the swim. Came in, got bike stuff on and went out. As soon as I left transition, my cleats slid on the road and I went down right before the mount line, but that only slowed me up for a second. What would you do differently?: Just more pactice to get the time faster. Better swim conditioning would leave me less tired here as well. Bike
Comments: Bike went much better than the swim. I felt good the whole way and really pushed. I dropped my one bottle of Accelerade trying to put it back in my cage, so I didn't drink as much of it as I would have liked to. It was only about half gone. All in all, I felt pretty good about the bike. What would you do differently?: You can always tune up the engine!!!! Keep working to improve speed. Transition 2
Comments: Good transition. I didn't do the flying dismount, because I hadn't practiced enough. Just stopped and got off bike. Pretty quick change to running shoes and race belt and out again. What would you do differently?: Thought it went pretty smooth, but I guess it can always be faster. Run
Comments: Took about until the turn-around to hit my stride. Until then my legs felt heavy and I felt clumsy. Once I hit the turn around, I felt a lot better and started to pick it up a bit. What would you do differently?: Maybe more brick workouts. Interval training definately helped improve my speed, so I guess more of that too. Post race
Warm down: Walked around a bit, drank some water and waited for my wife to finish. What limited your ability to perform faster: Mainly swim conditioning. I need to put in a lot more hours in the water. I was pretty happy with my run and bike. Overall, I had set a goal for myself of 1:40:00 and I broke that by a pretty decent margain, so I was happy about that. Not bad for the first one. Event comments: Started swim heats a bit late for some of them. Volunteers were great on the course, but I didn't feel like the city of Pittsburgh even knew about this race. Considering we put on a marathon with 10,000+, 700-800 people for a triathlon is a bit embarassing. This race could be promoted better and marketed better. Last updated: 2009-07-14 12:00 AM

Woke up about 4:30 and drank a bottle of Accelerade while packing the car. Left the house about 5am and got down to the race site at about 5:20am. Picked up timing chip, got body marked, and set up in transition. Then......waiting for start. This was my first race, so plenty of nerves.
I did a few laps around the block on the bike mainly to get into the gear I wanted to start in. Swim warmups were not allowed. I was going to jog a bit for warm up, but forgot to in the excitement. Stretched and did some rotations after biking to loosen up.
