Swim
Comments: Didn't really feel comfortbale during the whole swim. My arms felt tired right out of the box. Not sure if that was from not swimming for a week, or a lack of warm-up. Overall time was pretty good. Just tried to stay relaxed and swim easy. One funny thing did happen. When I got out to the end of the course, I had thought you rounded the bouy and start heading for shore, so I rounded the bouy nicely, and found some clear water and was moving along, look up to sight and find there is no one around me. Look to my right and see everybondy swimming to another bouy that is parallel to the shore that you have to turn around before headign back. DOH. Luckily I was only about 10 yards off course. Grabbed some feet when I could, my navigation was better than usual, however some of the people around me weren't doing to good, and kept running into me. At first I thought it was my navigation that was off, but everytime I checked I was right on. met sub 28 min. goal. What would you do differently?: A little warm-up and not have the pool close right before the race. Transition 1
Comments: Long run to T1. Steep hill right out of the water was a bit of a challenge when you are a little disoriented. Suit was stuck on arms as I was jogging to T1. Luckily it was a long run and had it down to my waist by the time I got to the bike. Put shoes and helmet on, had a Gu and I was off. What would you do differently?: nothing, after 6 races this year, pretty much have this down. Bike
Comments: Got on the bike and got settled in, looked down at my computer and it was reading all zero's. Again DOH. After the race I noticed that the rear wheel sensor was flipped. So with no computer I just decided to ride comfortably hard. I figured I could get a pretty good sense of speed by how much passing I was doing and how many were passing me. The hardest part about not having the computer was that I had no idea how far I was so I could judge my drinking. I ended up finishing my second bottle with about 3 miles to go. Course was nice, had some pretty stiff headwinds in some locations, but it was fairly flat, at least compared to what I'm used to. Was able to stay in the big ring the entire time, and never got out of the saddle on any climbs. Met 20mph+ goal What would you do differently?: Make sure the wheel sensors are lined up. Transition 2
Comments: Pretty quick again. Made sure I had another gel, and 2 endurolytes. Lots of racks, but I marked mine with soem pink surveyor's tape, which made it a snap to find. What would you do differently?: nothing, again after all the racing, have this pretty much down. Run
Comments: This was the part I was most interested in seeing how I would do. Haven't done any brick work outside of racing since early June. And even before then, the longest I had done was a 4 mile run. Looked at my watch heading out of T2 and saw I had almost exactly an hour to finish to break 2:45. Settled right into a comfortable pace, found my running legs right away. A few people blew past me right out of transition, and it was hard not to go with them, but I was determined to run my own race. First mile passed in 9:07, felt a lot slower which was a good sign. Second mile was in 8:55 and third was 8:35. In between mile 2 and 3 started to feel some cramping coming on, so I fell back on some of my marathon experience, and changed my turnover a bit, speeding up for a short distance then settling back down. Worked like a charm the rest of the race. Mile 4 was 8:41, and mile 5 was 8:23. During these two miles was trying to do some calculations in my head to see if it was possible to get sub 2:40, but by then my brain really wasn't working right. Hit the jets during the last mile (8:10) and the last 0.2 in 1:00. Finishing in 2:37:55. What would you do differently?: Push a little harder on the run earlier. Being this was my first Olympic, I wasn't sure how everything was going to work out, so I wanted to run the first half conservatively. Post race
Warm down: Ran into Kathy at the finish line, she was a godsend, some ice cold sponges were just what the doctor ordered. Had a bottle of gatorade and did some light stretching. What limited your ability to perform faster: lack of regimented training since the 1/2 IM. Sort of just did whatever I wanted for the last 2 months which worked outed fine for me. I think I did as best as I could for this day. I pretty much left everything out there. Event comments: Great race, great course and great organization. But the best part of all was meeting up with all the Mass. BT'ers. They are much cooler in person.Max, May, Kathy, Joanne, and everyone else that I'm forgetting, thanks for showing us Bt'ers from Conn. a great time. You guys Rock. Last updated: 2005-08-29 12:00 AM
