Pre-race routine:

NOT as planned. My husband and I caught a horrible virus. I was sick for four days this week-could not work out plus I was just wiped out from being ill so long-never been down that long from a virus...sheesh!!! So, I was just trying to stretch and remind myself I had prepared plenty for the day and just have fun-do my best-really went over transitions a lot in my mind and walked out/drove around the course the night before
Event warmup:

Got NO sleep bc my husband was still up with the virus...he even did the race!! We were determined!!! Dozed off a tiny bit, ate a grapefruit/granola bar for breakfast, headed out...stretched in transition and mentally zoned in
Swim
  • 14m 50s
  • 437 yards
  • 03m 23s / 100 yards
Comments:

I knew my swim time would be at least 12 minutes because that was my average time training in the pool. I think had I stayed on course then I could have shaved a good minute off but I was happy with my first open water swim. I have a phobia of swimming in lakes/ponds/oceans...so I overcame that pretty well this early morning!
What would you do differently?:

Stay on course-silly me! Try to not get so grossed out by the water...a few therapy sessions (aka-more tri's) should help :) I broke my stride several times bc I was grossed out my face being in the water!
Transition 1
  • 01m 50s
Comments:

I was highly impressed with my first ever transition!!!! Who knew???? I guess the pre-race day walk through and tips from others paid off for sure! I was very proud of this time! I even had to take a shoe off bc my tongue was messed up and put it back on again!
What would you do differently?:

Not a thing! Well...maybe get my shoe on right the first time!
Bike
  • 51m 26s
  • 14 miles
  • 16.33 mile/hr
Comments:

Oh my goodness! This was my absolute worst time on my bike! The roads were smooth and flat and there was hardly any wind! I think what threw my time down was I was concerned about being caught drafting-of which I don't do and really don't know how to do! However, I was a little annoyed when people would pass me and then slow down right in front of me bc they were wiped out from passing me!?!? Then, I would have to slow down and pass them...I could not keep a good pace bc of this...annoying! I had to also pause bc an ambulance was coming...not too much time added but still...having to stop, turn, start back up...still adds up...I thought I would EASILY have a 18-19 mph-that is what I have been training at with wind...there was really no wind...maybe my days off from having a virus this week were haunting me???
What would you do differently?:

Hopefully not have people pass me and then slow down in front of me! ARGH...don't get sick :) I think these factors slowed me down bc I expected my bike to be very easy and much faster.
Transition 2
  • 01m 43s
Comments:

Again, I was pleased with this time. I did wipe some sweat off and hesitated to sorta run through my mind I was doing everything correctly but I was pretty pleased with this time.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really...
Run
  • 40m
  • 3.28 miles
  • 12m 12s  min/mile
Comments:

Most of my training I do on an indoor track...I knew that was not smart! So, I need to buck up and endure the heat. I had been training by doing a spin class/running after but it just did not feel the same at all on race day. I guess I do sorta 'cool down' at the end of spin-not good. ....I did sprint the last part to the finish and wanted to cry-what a great feeling!
What would you do differently?:

Need to do some more realistic bricks. I plan on doing some quick five mile rides-jump off and run a mile...add to this routine in order to not feel so jell-o legged. I had planned to have a 10 minute mile but threw that out the window by walking. I did the best I could...I was so sick this week that I was just thankful to be feeling better to race on this day I had been looking forward to!
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed a handful of oranges and LOVED my ice cold water and towel...found my friends and sat down!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Probably being sick...expected to finish in 1:30 to 1:40...hopefully will get much closer next time.

Event comments:

What a great race for the first time being put on by Onurleft!!! I had a great time and will do this race again!

Course: My very very first time in open water, lol. I was a bit grossed out and was a sissy about trying not to get my face in the water...horrible I know! Otherwise, it was good and I only managed to swim the wrong way once but fairly quickly realized it but did have to swim back...I don't know how I managed that because this was an easy course I think..well set-up!

Course: I thought it was a little dizzy. A little upward elevation to start, winding path through a little trail, through a little wooded area on gravel with a tiny uphill climb...that is the fun part, huh??? I really thought I had tons of training in bike to run but my legs felt very wobbly when I started to run or shall we say jog :). I was doing pretty good-timed my first mile at 10 minutes but I did what I said I would not do...I walked! ARGH. I told myself I would not walk but I did. I don't know why-I regret it-I could have hung in there. I had been running six miles a day on top of all other training...but mostly on an indoor track. I think the heat played into my huge thirst which got to me a little.
