Total Time = 1h 37m 44s
Overall Rank = 35/101
Age Group = first timer wav
Age Group Rank = 2/20
Pre-race routine:

Drove 40min to race. Ate oatmeal and banana. lots of water.
Event warmup:

swam in the surf a bit to get a feel for the water. First wave started late so we had to stand around for a while waiting.
Swim
  • 16m 30s
  • 600 yards
  • 02m 45s / 100 yards
Comments:

First ocean swim. Difficult to deal with the surf - couldn't see first buoy very well because of wave height. Drank a lot of seawater on way to first buoy. After turn around first buoy I was able to swim parallel to the waves and make some actual forward progress because I wasn't fighting against the big oncoming waves. Swam with the surf after the second turn and felt fairly strong but still had a hard time navigating because of wave height.
What would you do differently?:

I don't know. Swim harder and use more kicking. The waves were really tough and I wasn't expecting them to be as big after getting past the initial surf. I should probably have handled the start differently but I guess that will happen with time. I guess I need to practice my ocean swims!
Transition 1
  • 02m 44s
Comments:

Took a few moments to breathe and wash the salt/sand off my feet. Rinsed the salt out of my mouth and drank some water before taking off.
What would you do differently?:

Move faster.
Bike
  • 50m 52s
  • 15.75 miles
  • 18.58 mile/hr
Comments:

Nice course but lots of turns and traffic. I would have been much more aggressive if I had been familiar with the course before the race.
What would you do differently?:

Drive course before race. Need clipless pedals and bike shoes. Had toe clip failure and seat was loose.
Transition 2
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

crowded getting to my bike rack. runners leaving so I had to wait for a few of them to turn down my aisle.
What would you do differently?:

watch out for runners leaving.
Run
  • 26m 25s
  • 3.3 miles
  • 08m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt pretty good. Stayed at 8min mile pace which was my goal! Could have run a little harder. Kicked the finish more than last time and that felt good.
What would you do differently?:

Push myself more at the start.

Post race
Warm down:

(7th in 35-39 age group although I was in the first timers wave.)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

the waves on the swim. also had a stomach bug for a few days before race so wasn't quite 100%.

Event comments:

Not as well organized as my first tri. Slow check-in on race day and delayed starts. Otherwise, very nice.
