Swim
Comments: Colder water (58f, brrrr) than prior years (i'm told). Wetsuit was a godsend. Started on beach but standing in the water (not wading). Smooth bottom, no rocks. Well-marked course. What would you do differently?: 1) Start out closer to front instead of the back. I'm not a fast swimmer but more people are slower than me than I thought. I ran into some feet and struggled to pass. 2)Also, pick up the pace a little. I swam slow and relaxed since this was my first OW swim in a race. Now I know I can. Transition 1
Comments: Long run to T1 on sand then rough concrete. Wetsuit got stuck on timing chip strap. Didn't have a spot in mind for dripping wetsuit. Put in on top of transition bag. Bag idea. What would you do differently?: Need more sense of urgency. More transition practice. Maybe practice with shoes clipped to pedals? (hmmm, I don't know about that). Find better place for dripping wetsuit. Bike
Comments: Mostly flat with a couple of shallow climbs (but still hard for me). Still, with being mostly flat and minimal wind, it was a fast course. Got passed by a lot of folks (not all of them with disc wheels and aero bars). What would you do differently?: Practice hills. Train harder of course. Maybe get some aero bars? Don't be a wuss when it comes to passing. Transition 2
Comments: Slight bottle neck in the dismount area (3 of us get there back to back). Long run in bike shoes was awkward. Yankz worked well. Probably saved me 10 seconds. Also didn't have to crouch to tie shoes and can't come untied. What would you do differently?: Run faster with back into T2. Maybe practice taking feet out of shoes (leaving shoes clipped) and running barefoot. Still, faster T1 than my last tri. Run
Comments: Took me a little over a mile to get into a groove. Legs felt weak. My first tri (Tower Tri in May) had a shorter bike and I took 42 sec longer in T2 in that race so I felt ok at that start of that run. This time my legs felt much weaker. But eventually they came back and I kept a decent pace (for me). What would you do differently?: Practice hills and do an occasional brick workout. Post race
Warm down: No warm down. Just stood around chatting. Stretched a bit and pigged out on energy drinks and picnic food. What limited your ability to perform faster: Goals too modest. Need to train more seriously. Could've pushed myself harder....But....satisfied for being only my 2nd tri ever. Event comments: Very organized. Great volunteers/civil servants. A lot of the course was through industrial areas but that's ok. Wasn't there to sight see. Some extremely rough spots on bike course (my only complaint) but they marked them with orange spray paint. Hopefully they will patch those areas up some day. Looking forward to next year! Last updated: 2009-07-19 12:00 AM

Got up at 3:45am. Had a bagel with a touch a light cream cheese and half of a vitamin water. Preloaded my car the night before with everything I could (even bike). Drove one hour to Waukegan (from south side of Chicago) and ate half of a Clif bar on the way. Got there at about 5:25am. Lots of people there already (transition opened at 5:00). Getting there early helps even thought the racks are numbered by wave. Had s clif shot block 30 minutes before my start (tasty).
Rode my bike from parking lot to transition area (about 1.5 miles or so). Then jogged a little.
