Comments:

We trained with rides of 50, 75, 100, 125 and 150. The prep was done. We tried to stay course specific when possible.
What would you do differently?:

Perhaps I would ride alone and pick different pace lines depending on my comfort level at that phase of the ride. This would mean leaving Sean to struggle by himself so perhaps I would do nothing differently.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The second 100 miles were beginning to get difficult. Sue and Larry had fatigued Sean with the first 100 miles of the ride. He was bonking, I made a decision to stay with him and get him close to Portland before or if I would drop him. Larry had left us and Sean dropped off the back on every hill bigger than an Ant would make. Because the four of us rode at different speeds it requires patience on all parts to stay together. I think to perform faster I would ride alone and pick different pace lines depending on my comfort level at that phase of the ride.

Course: The course is a double century leaving Husky stadium in Seattle and ending at Lloyd Center in Portland. The first leg was 100 miles from Seattle to Chehalis. Once you got out of Seattle the first 100 miles were more less south with a tail wind of about 8 mph. The roads were relatively flat with only one hill of significance which did not seem that long. The second 50 miles were through country side between Chehalis and Longview. There were plenty of rollers and fair to good roads with a small section of gravel. The final 50 miles from Longview to Portland were into a head wind on US 30. It was loud and busy but at least the traffic kept the head wind to something barely noticeable. There were a couple of long hills but they did not seem steep. Once you got to the St Johns Bridge the ride seemed to move along quickly.
