Pre-race routine:

I arrived just in time! I was lost. I only had enough time to register, put my race suit on, ask my rack-mates about the competition in NY (found out whom the fast swimmers were), put my numbers on my bike, and walked out to the river with my wetsuit on just before the start.
Event warmup:

Static Stretching
Swim
  • 06m 29s
  • 586 yards
  • 01m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

I had a very good swim. I got out front, and stayed there for the entire race. Only one person trailed me at the first buoy, and I couldn't shake him. The waves were quite difficult, but I just kept swimming hard. I sprinted towards the finish and had a fair exit. I lost a bit of time on the beach as I didn't have enough time to check where I had to go. But I still won the swim! First time this year!
What would you do differently?:

Pay attention to where I had to go next.
Transition 1
  • 01m 8s
Comments:

I was WINDED on my transition and there was a point there where I thought "ugh, why hurry..." and I let my suit sit on my heals until the last minute. I just wasn't motivated. I really could've hurried up more if I hadn't lost concentration.
What would you do differently?:

CONCENTRATE!
Bike
  • 52m 50s
  • 18 miles
  • 20.44 mile/hr
Comments:

This course killed me. I wasn't ready for the hills. I really wasn't. I did quite well on the flats and the downhills. I made up lots of time. But on every hill, I'd loose ground, and those were the ONLY times when I'd get passed. I was DEAD by the finish.
What would you do differently?:

I really wasn't hitting the hills hard, especially at the end. I need to practice hills, and do them HARD.
Transition 2
  • 00m 58s
Comments:

I thought I had a great transition, but I was only the 17th fastest in the race. I was clear, focused, and did quite well.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Run
  • 26m 9s
  • 3.5 miles
  • 07m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

Holy moly, that hill was BRUTAL. I was barely getting one foot in front of the other. I kept saving energy on the uphill cause I figured that It'd be hard on the down hill. I was wrong. I really should've just gone HARD up the hill. I didn't realize that I'd have more energy to go down.
What would you do differently?:

I'd attack that hill instead of pacing it. Too slow!
Post race
Warm down:

Paced around until my massage, and chatted people up chocked full of endorphins.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

1) Exhaustion from school and play. 2) Not knowing the course at all. 3) Not practicing on hills.

Event comments:

This race was very well managed. These folks are pros at this. The course was fun fun fun, even if I wasn't ready for it.

Course: My rack mates had said that the course was flat above the GIANT first hill. Boy, where they wrong. This was two loops of hills atop a GIANT first hill bigger and steeper than anything in SE Michigan. This course had one flat part that lasted for only 3 miles, that we got to do twice. But 6 miles of flat in 18 miles of riding is way too short for me. Luckily, the course was VERY well marked.
