Swim
Comments: There must have been a problem with my chip, which was too bad because I would have liked to have seen my time for this. I felt pretty good, breathing was good, navigation was excellent (probably because of maybe the most buoys I've ever seen on a swim course), but I was getting passed left and right. So I suspect my time was pretty slow. The lack of a wetsuit due to warm water probably didn't help matters. What would you do differently?: Work on my swimming more... Transition 1
Comments: No time due to chip problem. This was probably one of my faster T1's. Everything went pretty well and got onto the bike and away pretty quickly (for me anyway). What would you do differently?: Nothing really... Bike
Comments: This was a pretty good bike course. The climb out of the park after the swim was somewhat difficult, but then the course turned flat with some small to medium rolling hills. First few miles had a tailwind, so there would be a price to pay for that completing the loop. Last few miles featured some larger hills and headwind. The out and back portion in the park just prior to the return to transition was also pretty hilly. What would you do differently?: Performed pretty well, maybe take another gel or some shot bloks late in the bike to help my energy on the run. Transition 2
Comments: This is where I gave away 1st in my age group. The rest of the T2 went well, but I forgot to remove my helmet and didn't realize it until I had run about 300 yards out of transition. So I ran back to drop it and then got going. Given 1st in age group was just 30 seconds ahead of me at the end, this was a pretty dumb mistake. What would you do differently?: Take my helmet off :) Run
Comments: It was starting to get hot and humid during the run, and the initial hill out of the transition area was a tough one. After that it was moderate rolling hills in a nice shaded area for the next 1.5 miles or so, at which point the course became exposed, but luckily it was somewhat overcast still. I can't say I felt great but the volunteers were great and the sponges and ice were a life saver. I probably could have hydrated a bit more. Not a bad performance but I expected a bit better, especially with Pigman half-iron coming up soon. What would you do differently?: Not sure, hydrate a little more and work on hill training more. Post race
Warm down: Walked around a bit and got hosed off by the fire hose, which was awesome :) Drank lots. ate lots of watermelon, and waited for the awards ceremony. Age group award was pretty cool, a plaque with a geode mounted on it. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not enough running or swimming Event comments: This is really an excellent race, great organization, great volunteers, interesting area to visit as an out-of-towner. I would highly recommend it! Last updated: 2009-07-24 12:00 AM

Drove down from Waterloo Friday night and picked up the race packet in Burlington. Decided not to drive back to the park to check out the race site. Instead I ate the pre-race dinner of champions: Taco Bell! With lots of fire hot sauce packets consumed, my stomach was sure to feel outstanding on race day. It was a can't lose strategy. With that out of the way I went to the casino, stayed up way too late, but did make about $50. Race morning I got up, had oatmeal and part of a Clif bar, racked my bike on the car, and headed to the race site. Got through packet pickup quickly and easily (great job by the volunteers), and setup my transition area. The bars to hang the bike on could have been a little higher for us tall folks, as my bike kept falling. Blasted out some taco bell and hydrated a little.
Swam 100 yards or so
