Swim
Comments: I'm not sure why, but of all the races I've done, this one earns me the most contact in the swim. Nothing too bad, although I do think my foot made contact with someone's chin at the first turn. I don't generally kick too hard so I hope the guy was ok. I swam a couple of strokes and then took a look and nobody was having problems. Got in behind a guy to draft and kept that up for most of the swim. What would you do differently?: The past few years I've done this race and gone off in the first wave and had trained a lot. This year, not much training and went off in the second wave. It was quite a bit different. I'm thinking training more might be helpful. Transition 1
Comments: Still a bit dizzy coming into transition these days. So I went ahead and sat down to get the shoes on. Other than that, nothing remarkable. I'm still not sure why some people try those flying mounts and putting shoes on while riding. They weave all over the road and I watched one guy go off the road. I think I'll deal with the 10 seconds and keep putting my shoes on during transition. Bike
Comments: Oddly enough, I feel good about the bike ride. I've only ridden about 60 miles in the last three weeks so keeping above 20 mph is pretty much a shock. Starting in the second wave this year was a lot different. The last few years I've been pretty much alone on the bike ride. This year, there were a lot of guys around. What would you do differently?: Train? Transition 2
Comments: Again, I'll go ahead and change shoes in transition. Gain 10 seconds on guys messing with their shoes while riding and then lost 10 seconds during transition. Run
Comments: This was really a disappointment, and the mile pace is off as I think the course is only 2.9 miles. Last year I did this in just over 20 minutes and 27th overall. It is usually my strength. But it did not go well this year. My legs were just burnt. What would you do differently?: Train some speed. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: I've been burned out physically and mentally from work and from training for iron distance last year. Haven't done much of anything this year, and the 18 pound weight gain shows it. Event comments: I do enjoy this race and have done it all 6 years they've held it. Just disappointed in how the run went. I used to be able to gut out a 7 minute mile pretty easily. This year, the garmin showed me over 8 minutes for all of them. Ah well. I'm doing this for fun. Got up at 5 and tried to get down some food. Stomach was still ooky after traveling all week and eating out too much. Oh, and all that drinking, late nights and lack of sleep probably didn't help. I did get a 5 mile run on Monday but that was my last exercise other than 12 ounce curls.
Anyway, put down a pop tart and some water. Couldn't get the banana down though.
Got there just in time to wait in line for check-in. Not too bad. If I hadn't done this before I would have started getting nervous. Got the packet, chip, body-marking and set up transition. Went for a 200 yard swim to warm up.
