Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 4:30 and had to pick up friend. We drove to Louisville from Lexington, about 1 hour. Ate oatmeal, powerbar, and drank gatorate until start of race.

THIS RACE WAS CANCELED HALF WAY THROUGH DUE TO A DRUNK DRIVER KILLING A PARTICIPANT!!!!
Event warmup:

None. Stood in line forever and talked to a really nice woman waiting in line with me.
Swim
  • 18m 30s
  • 800 yards
  • 02m 19s / 100 yards
Comments:

I passed quite a few people until i got behind a guy. He wouldnt let me pass and just pushed off the wall real hard, but was sooo slow after about 20 meters. I didn't kick once after the first 100m.
What would you do differently?:

Put down a faster swim time on the race forms.
Transition 1

Comments:

I don't have my exact time, so this is just a guess.
Bike
  • 51m 18s
  • 14 miles
  • 16.37 mile/hr
Comments:

This is where the chaos started. About 5 miles in, another rider(out and back) was yelling at me to be careful, and someone just got hit. I slowed down about 2 miles an hour then due to a large intersection. I turned the corner and saw a horror scene. A red car was totally smashed in and a bike was torn to pieces. That really took the wind out of my sails. About a half a mile later I saw a huge circle of firetrucks, ambulances, and police cars. I rode no faster than 15 to 16 mhr after that. Really really freaked me out.
Transition 2
  • 02m
What would you do differently?:

Buy elastic laces.
Run
  • 30m 30s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

I saw many people on my run out, but they cancelled the race about 2 minutes after I left t2. I saw no one on my run back in and it was really weird. I was near the end and I could hear a woman on a megaphone yelling at everone to leave and the triathlon was cancelled.
Post race
Warm down:

None. We had to leave the area as soon as I returned from my run. I had to drive an hour back and was just kind of put out.

I really hope they do this event next year in the name of the participant who was murdered.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I tore my acl a year ago and started triathlon training is a means of physical rehab/therapy.

Event comments:

I just feel horrible about the tragedy that occurred during the event.
