Pre-race routine:

Worked until 9 the night before, went to a friend's house until 11:00, got to bed by midnight, woke up at 4. Got to the race by 5:45, pump-up playlist worked well in the car. Ate most of a clif bar, had a bowl of cereal, and part of a banana.

Event warmup:

Ran around the park, stretched. No swimming.
Swim
  • 05m 5s
  • 300 yards
  • 01m 41s / 100 yards
Comments:

So short. So easy. Just paced myself conservatively. Much quicker pace than before. Passed one person.
What would you do differently?:

More time in pool. ESPECIALLY with the Chicago triathlon coming up, and with it being an 800m swim
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Only practiced the running jump the day before, will do that more, went pretty well. Time is part of the biking
What would you do differently?:

Practice makes perfect
Bike
  • 57m 6s
  • 18 miles
  • 18.91 mile/hr
Comments:

I did well on the hills. Being lighter than most of the people racing definitely helped. I started to feel my rib pains, eased up on certain portions. When tasting my sweat, I thought I was licking a salt cube. Limited drinking my sports drink mix from there on out. Really need to get two water bottles mounts and fill 1 up with water/sports drink, and the other with just water.
What would you do differently?:

Get another water bottle mount. Otherwise very pleased, being that this is my 2nd triathlon, and 3rd month of riding.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

The bike next to mine had fallen over on top of my shoes. I hate moving other people's bike, so I just cursed and pulled them from underneath the bike. Took some extra time. Time included in bike.

When I get triathlon shoes, hopefully this will improve.
What would you do differently?:

Practice.
Run
  • 22m 54s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

I was afraid of having my rib hurting, so I kept the pace decent, but conservative. Too bad the whole course, with the exception of a downhill after flat and the finish, was UPHILL.
What would you do differently?:

Find the thin line between where my rib hurts and a fast pace
Post race
Warm down:

Run around park

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nagging rib, not as much training as I would have liked, but I have only been at this sport for 3 months and managing to finish in the top 10% overall in my first two races, so I'm not going to complain too much.

Event comments:

The course is incredibly challenging for the distance. I loved it!
