Overall Rank = /
Age Group = 55-59
Age Group Rank = 19/19
Pre-race routine:

Up at 5, bagel and peanut butter
Park at swim start, bus to transition, set up
Back to swim start, panic over not being able to find my goggles...multiple trips to car, finally found them
Reno helped me get my wetsuit on, then he went off to his wave

Event warmup:

See above for multiple trips to and from car!
Swim
  • 39m 19s
  • 2143 yards
  • 01m 50s / 100 yards
Comments:

The water temp was cool and I was glad of the wetsuit. Straight shot down the river, but I was listing off to the right so I swam nearer the shore than was optimal to take advantage of current. I didn't "feel" any current, but the seim time was faster than I would have expected, so it was surely helping.

Pretty rough the first 2/3 of the event, had trouble getting into my swim rhythm.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe practice the day before in the river. I was reluctant to do that because I thought it would make me more nervous if it didn't go well. Or find a river around here for practice.

Transition 1
  • 08m 9s
Comments:

When I got out of the water, I was weaving and stumbling like a drunken sailor. The wetsuit strippers were awesome! I felt dizzy and disoriented, so my time was pretty slow to get changed.

Reno waited for me after his swim and we left out together.
What would you do differently?:

Have a better swim!
Bike
  • 4h 30m
  • 56 miles
  • 12.44 mile/hr
Comments:

Slower than I wanted, and felt pretty bad by the end. I ate Luna bars and Shot Bloks and tolerated them well. I drank more water than usual and peed a couple of times, but still might not have drunk enough.

Bless the Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club who monitored the course. Triple bless my personal wingman, Latimore, who followed me for the last 10 miles!
What would you do differently?:

More practice with hills
Transition 2
  • 07m 9s
Comments:

Another slow one; Reno was ready to go long before I was, but I needed a few minutes to recover.
Run
  • 3h 11m
  • 13.1 miles
  • 14m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

I was in pretty rough shape at the beginning. My training partner needed to go faster so I told him to take off. My mind was definitely rebelling, too. I didn't WANT to run, so I walked much more than I'd have liked. When I did run, I did okay.

I passed one water stop that had only Gatorade. Since Gatorade doesn't do well with my digestive system, I passed, but I was quite thirsty. I ran up to a car stopped at a light and asked them if they had some water. Bless their hearts, they dug around in their things and found me a bottle of water. Triathletes are the BEST people!!!!!

I did not like having two loops...going around with people who were on their second loop wasn't fun.

What would you do differently?:

More training....
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, ate pizza and a banana

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Inexperience and mental attitude.

Event comments:

Amazing, astonishing and FUN. We had as our goals to have fun and finish upright and ambulatory. We did that!

I could have done better in some areas, but mostly I'm just tickled pink that I completed it!

The volunteers were awesome.

Post-note: someone in my rack left her wetsuit. There was a 404 number on it, so I took it with me and called her to arrange to give it back to her. She was delighted. We talked for a while and it turned out SHE WAS IN THE CAR THAT GAVE ME WATER!!!!!! Isn't it wonderful that her good deed was so quickly repaid???
