Pre-race routine:

Second tri and first long race (first one was just a sprint) So didnt sleep too well, had lots of nerves! Got up early and had a good breakfast, drank coffee along the way.
Event warmup:

Had to park really far away, so didnt have alot of time for warmup. Did a few running strides then hopped into the water.
Swim
  • 38m 58s
  • 2187 yards
  • 01m 47s / 100 yards
Comments:

Start caught me by surprise, there wasnt alot of ceremony!
Nice wide area for the mass start, but I still get panicked swimming in large groups.
What would you do differently?:

More expereince needed to get over the OWS mass start, still freaks me out!
Transition 1
  • 02m 20s
Comments:

No Tri shoes, so Have to put them on BEFORE getting ont he bike, slows things down a bit.
What would you do differently?:

Get some tri shoes!
Bike
  • 2h 38m 42s

  • 21.57 mile/hr
Comments:

Bumpy roads, and all the vibration caused a bolt from my front shifter to pop out! Stopped to look for pin, then just settled on using a screwdriver to set my fronderaileur to the big chainring, happened exaclty half way through the race.
What would you do differently?:

Be more meticulous about checking my bike over before the race! Cost me 4 or 5 precious minutes and dropped me out of placing in my age group >_<
Transition 2
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

Dont remember it
Run
  • 1h 21m 19s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 06m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

Latched on to the 3rd place finisher for my first loop (his second) so it was a nice fast 10K, great to have someone to chase. The second half was a little slower (44min) and the 45K of the bikeride in the big chainring really took its toll. Quads were really sore and had to stop to stretch them out a few times. Otherwise good run!
Post race
Warm down:

Jumped in water for a bit, then headed for beer and nachos.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

poor swimming ability and inexpereicen in OWS. Poor bike maintenance and mediocre transitions.

Event comments:

Great experience for first IM. Encouraged me to sign up for LPIM 2010!
