Swim
Comments: Started in the 2nd of 2 Men's waves which was the slower wave. I thought I'd be one of the faster of the slower group so i decided to try to get a jump and get away from the crowd. This seemed to have worked out well. Since there were 75 men in the "faster" group and i placed 71 overall (including the women's wave) i'd say i put myself in the correct place. The time includes about a 200 yd (maybe more) run back to transition area from the lake exit. What would you do differently?: I would have liked to get a little bit of a warmup in prior to the start. Transition 1
Comments: I focused a lot on my thinking about my T's this week. I setup well and made all my decisions before the race (no socks on bike, socks for run). I setup my shoe's with the laces crossed for a quicker tie, had my socks rolled up and even rolled biking my gloves up a bit to make the easier to put on. The only problem i had was getting out of the transition area and onto my bike because there were some riders riding the the transition area ! What would you do differently?: Not much. I liked the setup, hopefully i can get a bit faster at it. Bike
Comments: The bike was hard for me this week. Legs felt very heavy and tired. Most likely due to the weekends workout (not posted yet ;) plus playing tennis the night before. I really felt the roots on the trail, i think because my legs were so tired and heavy i had a hard time picking my butt up off of the seat. I ended up standing too much on the hills. Cornering and hills were okay, not great. I don't think i saw the course far enough ahead. Also, it was a little more crowded than last week and there were some backups and dismounts on a couple of the bigger hills. What would you do differently?: Let myself recover better before the race. Try to look a little farther ahead in the course. Transition 2
Comments: Another solid transition. No trouble finding my rack area. Racked the bike. shoes off. helmet off. gloves off. sock/shoe, sock/shoe - go. What would you do differently?: not much. This was pretty good. Run
Comments: I'm thinking the problem here was lack of Advil. I'd taken it a noon and fogotten to take another dose before the race. My hip was really bothering me after tennis last night. It felt okay in the morning, but still kind of achy. I was really bummed, but after a mile i had to walk a bit. Then i ran for another 1/2 mile and walked. then again at the 2 mile mark, then one more time at about 2.5 miles. I didn't think i'd be able to start running again at all, but there was a long up hill, i jogged up and ran to the finish. What would you do differently?: Recuperate ? Take more NSAIDs ? other than taking some NSAIDs before the race, i'm not sure what more i could have done. I'm sure that probably would have helped and i may have been able to run the whole way. I hope i can figure out how to get my hip in some kind of shape for next week. Probably just swim & bike this week, no running. Tho i am scheduled to play tennis again on Monday night :( Post race
Warm down: It was someone's birthday and they were handing out popsicles at the finish ! awesome - cause it was really hot an muggy. Saw my WT friend Tracey finish just after me - gave her a high-five. She said it was one of her best races and she felt great. Awesome !! Then she ran back to run her husband Craig into the finish. It was his first time doing the race !! Saw them all afterwards (her 5 & 7 year old girls do the mini-tris !! how cool is that) Craig said it was hard but he loved it ! Another one hooked !! Packed up my gear, got my clothes and was actually able to take a shower this week ! Stopped for an iced coffee and a donut at DD for the 1 hour ride home. What limited your ability to perform faster: Uh - i'm going to go with my hip and lack of medication. Maybe thro in overtraining ? Tho, i'd only say it was overtraining because i have an injury. I don't really think it was too much for me to normally do. Event comments: This was my 3rd race @ WT this year. I'd like to get 5 in. I was a little disappointed with the run, especially when i saw the results and placed in the top half for the swim & the bike. If i could have run my normal race (around 28 min's) i think i would have placed around 77 overall. So there's that to shoot for next time :) Last updated: 2009-07-29 12:00 AM
