Pre-race routine:

Good sleep. Up at 4:30 am. Ate a Lara bar and had coffee. Got to the race site by 6:00. Had a banana and a Jay Robb's protein powder drink at 7:00. Swim start was 9:08.
Event warmup:

Jogged about 5 min and did soem stretching before swim start.
Swim
  • 05m 22s
  • 250 yards
  • 02m 09s / 100 yards
Comments:

Fairly uneventful average swim for me. Caught up with person in front of me towards the end but did not pass. I loved the wide lanes in this pool. Was a LOT less chaotic than the last pool swim tri I did.
What would you do differently?:

Warm up in water if possible. More speed drills.
Transition 1
  • 01m 28s
Comments:

First time with cleats and clipless pedals. Got on helmet and into shoes fairly quickly. No socks. Ran with cleats to mount line. Bike rack was in an awkward location where I had to run over pavement, then a curb and grassy area with bike racks, and back down a curb to pavement. Got clipped in fairly quickly at the mount line. Not perfectly smooth, but good for first time. I didn't fall!
What would you do differently?:

Practice clipping in quickly.
Bike
  • 36m 34s
  • 10 miles
  • 16.39 mile/hr
Comments:

Took off super fast. Made a mistake changing gears improperly on a tough hill which slowed me down horribly. Also got a little confused with people at intersections (including volunteers) who looked like they were marking a turn, but they weren't! On two occasions I slowed down because of being unsure about a turn.
What would you do differently?:

I've only had this road bike for 2 weeks. Not enough time to get confident with the gear shifting and used to the clipless pedals. Just need more training with clipless pedals and gears. Bike harder.
Transition 2
  • 01m 9s
Comments:

Ran back over the awkward area to bike rack. Was able to get out of cleats without unstrapping. I had put them on a little loose for this purpose. Put on run shoes, grabbed run belt and took off.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really went wrong; just need to get faster.
Run
  • 26m 44s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 30s  min/mile
Comments:

Started out a bit slow and out of breath but found a pace and kept with it the whole way.
What would you do differently?:

Run harder.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked it off.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not having enough time with my new road bike and pedals prior to the race.

Event comments:

Can't wait to do it again!
