Swim
Comments: Got very comfortable quickly. I don't really know why, but this was the best swim of my life! I never stopped stroking and only a couple times felt short of breath. Very happy with this performance. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Transition 1
Comments: Just tried to maintain a calm pace. What would you do differently?: I should've run from the water all the way to my transition area, but I just was focused on saving energy for the next 2 legs, so I walked most of the way and probably lost a good :45 - 1:00. Bike
Comments: I heard from people who did this race before say that it was a tough bike, but I had no idea. What would you do differently?: Prepare much better by training more hills and distances. Transition 2
Comments: Actually felt pretty good coming off the bike. I dropped my gears down and increased cadence for the last 1/4 mile or so, as to not be so cramped coming off the bike. I took my time, but still got out in a good time. What would you do differently?: I hind-sight, I should've taken in more electrolytes during T2 and definitely stretched my quads out. Run
Comments: Well just as the swim was my best ever, this was my worst run of my life. I started from T2 feeling suprisingly good, and able to stride pretty well. But around the 2nd mile, I started getting bad cramps and spasms throughout my quads. After that, every hill I started up caused my quads to totally lock up, and progressively get worse as the run went on. I met up with another guy having the same problem and we ran/walked together as best we could till the finish. I just physically couldn't run up the hills, so I walked up and when it flatened out, was able to jog again. I was really crushed that this was happening to me, I've never cramped before! What would you do differently?: Probably should've taken Endurolytes prior to the bike and run, or taken in much more HEED to get the electrolytes I had lost during the bike. Maybe this would've helped with the cramping. I also didn't drink enough water on the bike. I was taking in what I usually do on a 12 mile bike on a flat surface, but these conditions were far more demanding. Post race
Warm down: I about threw up and passed out after crossing the finish line. My whole body felt just spent! My wife really looked concerned, as she should have. After sprints, I usually feel great after about 2-5 minutes. This took me close to a half hour to feel like I could walk to the transition area to get my stuff to leave. I stretched out a bit, had a banana, cookie, Sprite and mucho water. What limited your ability to perform faster: Cramps. It's frustrating to know that I easily lost 10 minutes because of cramping. I had checked my watch at each mile mark, and I did the first 3 miles in 27 minutes, the 2nd half took me 39! Event comments: I'm going to sign up again on Jan 1st for next years race, but now I know what I need to do to prepare, and what to expect. Last updated: 2005-09-05 12:00 AM

Arrived at 7:30. Set up transition, picked up packet and chip. Put on wet suit.
Arrived too late to warm up. By the time I made my way through the line for packet pick-up, I had about 10 minutes to get my wetsuit on and get down to the water. We were the 2nd wave to start.
