Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:30...30 minutes before the alarm clock! Took some time to make coffee and get ready. Rode to race site with Ron and Neil.
Event warmup:

Short run and stretch.
Swim
  • 29m 29s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 48s / 100 yards
Comments:

Not my best swim performance. I was about a minute slower than last year but dealing with a slight shoulder injury from softball on Thursday. My power mostly comes from my right arm and this certainly played a role in the slower time. I swam the course pretty well but didn't really push very hard until the last 300 or so. I did, however, feel really fresh once I hit T1.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder, earlier.
Transition 1
  • 01m 56s
Comments:

Slowed a little by the wetsuit but overall a good T1 for a wetsuit race.
Bike
  • 1h 11m 46s

  • 20.78 mile/hr
Comments:

I would venture to bet that this is the most beautiful bike course of any USAT sanctioned event! I found myself losing focus on what I was doing because I was enjoying the scenery! The first half was so much faster than the second half. I think I averaged 23 going out and 20 coming back. I really can't complain about this one.
What would you do differently?:

Focus!

Comments:

This is a tough 10K course with the first half being slightly up hill and the last half slightly down hill. I started out feeling pretty good running with Ron and getting my legs under me. At mile one I hit my rhythm and focused on the cadence of my pace and breathing. I felt really strong all the way up to the turn. After the turn I tried to pick off guys one-by-one. I passed one guys in my AG at mile 4 and heard him kick in his breathing and pace. I was pushing hard to stay in front of him thinking the whole way that this was one more AG place up. With 2 miles left I looked at my watch and saw 2:15 and knew that I'd have to put together two 7:20's to hit my 2:30 goal...and stay in front of the guy behind me. I got to the bottom to the course and headed toward the finish and heard my AG competitor kick-in to high gear. I couldn't hold him off and he passed me 5 yards from the finish. I crossed with 00:12 to spare, though so I was well satisfied!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. This was a really good run for me.
Post race
Warm down:

Went to sit in the river!

Event comments:

This has become my favorite race! There is no better course in America! The beauty of this course adds so much to the overall experience!
