Run
Comments: Soft sand sucks! Run was particulary hard on the legs, especially the 3rd segment. The brief stint on the boards duting the 1st and 2nd segments provided some releif, segment 3 was the longest segment through primarily soft sand. Tough! What would you do differently?: Participate in an event with a lower likliehood that the swim will be canceled. Transition 1
Comments: Running jump on bike was awkward, need to practice more. Ran through sandy ground with bike in socks with shoes attached to bike. Socks stuck to velcro on shoes making transition into shoes difficult. What would you do differently?: Neet to practice T1 more. Running jump on bike and feet in shoes in particular. Bike
Comments: I felt really good on the bike. Was able to keep a steady cadence and pass quite a few cyclists. Cateye had me at a 23-24 mph average, although I forgot to start my timer. Course was extremely crowded by the 3rd loop. one cyclist in particular had no regard for others when merging, nearly took me out twice. Ass! What would you do differently?: Could try to push a higher gear next time. I could have squeezed a few seconds, maybe even a min off my time had i pushed a little harder through segments of the course. Transition 2
Comments: Downpour started just prior to bike finish. T2 was wet! I had my socks on, so had to run to T2 through the rain and sand in wet socks I HATE WET SOCKS! I wasn't about to change my socks, so in my wet shoes they went, wet and covered with sand, fun! NEED TO KNOT MY QUICK LACES! Lace fell through the quick release thing and I had to take time to thread it through again, definitly cost me 20-30 seconds. What would you do differently?: KNOT MY QUICK LACES! Carry boke OVER sand when wet, not through it. Bike was disgusting afterward. Run
Comments: Chugged too much gatorade on my way out of T2 that I would come to regret 1/2 way through the run. After the 1st run and biking hard, I was not looking forward to this run. Difficult to get my legs running through the sand and tidal pools. The boards helped regain my cadence, but was shot as soon as they ended. Gatorade started bothering my stomach at the 1/2 way point, made it uncomfortable for a few seconds, but was able to manage it. Didn't develop a good rhythm until I hit the 3rd segment. Sand had hardened a bit from all the runners throught the race. Once I hit the bike path I picked up my pace a bit, then sprinted the last 150 yards. This run was TOUGH! What would you do differently?: Not drink as much in T2. Start sprint 100 yards earlier. Post race
Warm down: Walking around the finish area with Evan (my 2 1/2 year old son) Grabbed some water. What limited your ability to perform faster: Sand, sand, sand and tidal pools. Event comments: Overall a good race. I was spent at the end and felt I left everything on the race course. I was shocked to see I finished 86 out of 416, I couldn't be happier with my place. This was one of those races where you have to roll with the punches, and I felt I did my best, I didn't quit and kept moving forward. It was definitly a challenge. I will do this race again next year and hope there is still a swim! Last updated: 2009-08-05 12:00 AM
