Pre-race routine:

Packe dup at the hotel and drove to the race
Event warmup:

Shivering. Lots of shivering. Sadly, I grew up in Ohio and 69 with rain did nto used to feel cold.
Swim
  • 51m 15s
  • 2111 yards
  • 02m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

Bad swim. I drank a lot of lake water. I later heard others say teh same thing.
I think the cool weather got to me. My start was very lackluster. I felt very ambivalent about being at the race.
What would you do differently?:

Go harder from the start.
Transition 1
  • 02m 1s
Comments:

Nothing spectacular. My gear was all in bags in an attempt to keep things dry.

There was about a half inch of water in teh transition area due to the rain. I think I saw animals pairing up and heading towards an old man on a boat.
Bike
  • 2h 01m 21s

  • 21.26 mile/hr
Comments:

At the pre-race meeting, the RD made a big deal of the wet pavement. I think it made a lot of people ride really slow. The pavement was not slick.

But I made sure to let people know I was coming up on them so they did not swerve or make a panic manuever.

The wind was gusty at times, especially when crossing the bridges.
What would you do differently?:

I need to make sure I stay ahead on my nutrition. I got behind on the second lap and started to bonk. A big swig of Infinit and 10 minutes later all is good. Infinit rocks!
Transition 2
  • 02m 41s
Comments:

When I got to my rack, a woman who was racking there also had knocke dit over. I took a little time to help her fix it. She won her AG and took 2nd overall. And she just started tris in May.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 2h 12m 8s
  • 13.3 miles
  • 09m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

I wondered if I had gone too hard on the bike. i told myself the run was a new day so forget the bike. It worked. My previous best pace for a 1/2 I run was 11:42. I was at 9 minute miles for the first 6 miles. At the turnaround, I was able to lift the pace. Mistake! At mile 11 the wheels were falling off.

With 1/4 mile to go, the course made a U. I could see someoen coming up quick. In spit eof how I felt, I was not going to get passed with the finish line in site! Apparently, I wanted to not get passed mor ethan he wanted to pass me. Man, that hurt!
What would you do differently?:

Pace better. Wait until mile 9 to open it up.
Post race
Warm down:

At pizza and try to stay warm.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I need to train teh run more. Next year's goal: get my run closer to my bike ability.

Event comments:

Need to coment on event start time. The weather conditions were bad. Visibility was low an dteh bike course had to be changed. Start delay was due to safety so it was a non-issue.

I've heard the RD take a beating. I have only done 2 of his races. I can see him being abrasive, but given today's conditions, I think he did a good job.

And speaking of today's conditions, it REALLY made me appreciate any volunteer who showed up today. I thanked each and every one of them.

Course: The course was long. My swim was at least 10 minutes longer than I am capable of. This was my first tri swim in choppy water after 9 seasons. On teh way out, I drank plenty of lake water. In one direction on the swim, it felt like surfing as we were going in the direction of the waves. The sprint distance race wen tfirst. Unfortunately, a couple people were pulled from the swim. It appeared to be a menatl thing with the waves. I think everyone got out of the swim safely.

Course: The course was shortened because some of it was under 10-12 inches of water. Most of the remaining course was OK with some large areas under 1-2 inches of water. My days of delivering newspapers on a bike in Ohio in slush came in handy. I am also glad I ride rain or shine. I heard some people mention they had never ridden in the rain before.
