Pre-race routine:

the usual, Pop Tarts and Diet Pepsi, parked at a business just before the turn to the parking area. (great spot! 10min walk around side of lake...used this place the last few years). Walked in, set up T, then off to the PP. Waited for DonnaWiz to show, so we could pump her tires. (Im too superstitious to pumpn them up without her there!) Chatted with Donna and Nikki.
Event warmup:

VERY short run down the path, until I realized that the finish line had the path closed! Tried to get out on the road...again no go..."you can't leave, bikes will be coming out". So, no warm up after all. Ugggghhhh. For a duathlon, I really need a warm up!

Comments:

7-8th place in first mile, worked up to 4th soon after that, and held that, gaining consistently over 5th. Ran hard, felt good. Cardio was great, legs couldn't go much faster.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, pushed it almost to my limit.

Comments:

Long run from run in to bike. Came into T1 about a second after 3rd place. I think she also came out of T1 just ahead of me. Knocked my bike pump over, and the handle extended out into the bike lane, so I stopped, tried to set it up and push the handle down...cost me a couple seconds, but felt I was being a responsible athlete (while I was saying "oh crap" now she will beat me out of T1.
What would you do differently?:

not be quite so responsible?

Comments:

hmmmm, comfortable pace? Should have been too hard. Passed consistently, was passesd a couple of times (meaning I passed him too) by a guy who kept blocking. Rode right on the center line ALL the time. (for about 8 miles or so!) I kept having to drop back thinking "don't get caught drafting" many others doing similar, just not as blatant about it. Another guy was yelling on your left so stinkin loud that I kept jumping, and he was WAAAYYY behind me!! Sounded like he had Craigs bullhorn! Mr blocker just consistently kept pissing me off, until I finally got mad enough that I blasted past him and didn't let him catch me. (of course I was way over the center line to do this) Norm gave a shout out as he passed me in the last half mile, good to see him on the course!
What would you do differently?:

get pissed off sooner, and push even harder. Did have some calf cramping off and on the whole bike, just kept reminding myself to drop my heels, and pull full circles on the pedals! I need to bike train better. Kind of stagnant with my pace. why no COURSE MARSHALLS on this big of a race??
Transition 2

Comments:

did ok, took long drink of Gatorade in transition...no sign of the top 3 women. put hat on while running.
What would you do differently?:

Comments:

just after finishing mile 2, saw 3rd place woman up ahead of me. I was slowly gaining on her, but decided to stop for a drink of water. she kept on, increasing her lead. on the fly decision, hoping it would come back to bite her not stopping. I decreased her lead steadily, tried to decide if I could over take her, without her pushing even more. Did not pan out (Im a wuss I guess...) and finished 5 sec after her, while still decreasing her lead.
What would you do differently?:

not stop for that water, get just behind her until last 20 yrds or so, then go for the kill. Better yet, smack the guy blocking me for 2/3rds of the bike, therefore coming into T2 AHEAD of 3rd place, and keep that lead!!

Happy with both run paces, esp with the new hip pain.
Post race
Warm down:

chatted with 3rd place a bit, then Nikki who finished just ahead of me. Later found Donna (and she, Nikki, Lauren and I talked a bit), Ben, Norm, Scott, Matthew, Mr2Tony, Crowny2, Wavedog..and Im sure others.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

sore hip, blocking ningcompoop (sp??) on the bike

Event comments:

I love this race!! 2 yrs Olympic, 3rd yr of the Du. Im the queen of 4th female OA, and 1st age group on the DU...SAME for 3 yrs, with different people in the top 3 each time!! With the Du group growing every year, Im suprised that they still only give hardware to the top 3 OA, no age group.
Thats really ok though, since we all know how we finished!! Happy that the rain held out, few sprinkles during awards and pouring on my way home! Will continue to do this race. (Great sweatshirt too!) Loved visiting with the Donkai Nation, which was moderately represented.
