Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5am, had a PB&J, packed up the car and headed with the husband out to Pleasanton. Arrived later than I wanted to (at almost 7am) but ended up being able to squeeze my bike onto a rack in a good location near the bike out/run out in transition. Got body marked, hit the bathroom and checked out the swim course. Then the waiting began.
Event warmup:

I was in the second to last wave so I had planned to have a good warm up while I was waiting around. About 30 minutes before my wave was supposed to go off I hit the bathroom again, put on my wetsuit and had a Cliff bar, thinking that I would warm up a bit before the first wave went off. I got in the water and paddled around a bit. It was really warm and I was one of the few people racing with a wetsuit. I probably could have left it at home.

The first wave (age 50+, relays and special needs) started at 7:50 and I was supposed to start at 8:25. Someone in the first swim wave ended up having trouble (not sure if it was a heart attack or a panic attack or what) and had to be brought to shore by the lifeguards and taken away in an ambulance. I do know that the person was breathing on their own when they were taken so I really hope they ended up being ok. Because of this the race was delayed by an hour. I ended up getting back in the water once when we were waiting for the race to re-start so I could stay warmed up. I didn't plan for the delay from a nutrition standpoint which would come back to bite me later in the race.

Comments:

Seeded myself in the front row on the right side. It was a running start which was fun. Very strong swim for me, felt really really short since I've been doing races with 800m swims this season. Found some feet to draft off of for awhile during the middle part of the race, but a lot of the women in front of me were zig zagging which was really annoying.
What would you do differently?:

Push a bit harder, considering it was such a short swim.
Transition 1
  • 02m 3s
Comments:

I was fast compared to the rest of my AG on this transition, my spot near the bike out ended up working great. I think I finally have my transition set up down to a science.

Comments:

I absolutely killed this bike ride. I was hoping to average 16-17 mph and to average 18+ exceeded all of my expectations. I passed tons of people from my AG and 3 of the AG's in front of me. I was only passed by 3-4 people the entire ride. I can't wait to see what I can do next year with some aero bars and some dedicated bike training.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe hold back a bit, it felt so good to go fast on the bike that I think my run suffered as a result.
Transition 2
  • 01m 20s
Comments:

A lot of fast transitions for T2 in this race since most people weren't racing with bike shoes. Considering that I did the shoe switch I'm very pleased with my time. I think my practicing transitions and my proximity to the bike in/run out was very helpful.
What would you do differently?:

Take my full water bottle from my bike on the run with me. If only I had known!

Comments:

My race sort of fell apart on the run. Because of the race delay I was starving when I got off the bike and in a huge need of water. Also, since it was an hour later it was a lot hotter than I had expected (almost 90 degrees). The first (and only) aide station wasn't until mile 2 and the course was a lot hillier than I had expected since there were no elevation charts for the courses for us to check out ahead of time. I walked some of the steep hills and the aid station and just sort of shuffled the rest of the way. I wasn't the only one hurting but it wasn't fun. Six minutes slower than Chicago is not acceptable in my book.
What would you do differently?:

Train in the heat. Carry my own water/nutrition rather than relying on the course. Not wear new running shoes that aren't broken in.
Post race
Warm down:

Got some water, 1/2 a banana and 1/2 a bagel with PB. Walked around a bit stretched out the legs, then jumped in the car since we had to go directly to my aunt's mom's 90th birthday party.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The heat, insufficient nutrition and not knowing what to expect on the run course limited my performance. These results further confirm my decision to focus on the run during the upcoming off season. I'm taking this week off from S/B/R and next week I start my Half Marathon training plan!

Event comments:

I don't know if I would do this race again. They were very unorganized.

The race is expensive and yet rather than giving us swim caps they had everyone scrambling at the last minute to make sure that all participants had bright colored swim caps which had not been specified in the race instructions. I brought my silver cap and was told that I couldn't wear it. Luckily they were able to give me a yellow cap, which I could have brought for myself had I known ahead of time. The aid station was in the totally wrong place and given the heat there really should have been two.

The late start could not be avoided given the medical emergency (and huge props to the medical team/lifeguards for their handling of that) but the race itself was very disorganized.
