Swim
Comments: Not the best swim for me. I had never down a race where we run in as opposed to an in the water start. I was paranoid my googles were going to leak. I had a hard time getting my groove in the swim and had to look up a lot more than I wanted to. On the way back in I got hit in the head by an oncoming swimmer who knocked my googles off and they started to leak. I had to stop briefly to readjust them but I could manage to get them on quite right so for the last little bit of the race they had a slow leak. I sucked it up and swam with a little water in the lenses. Thankfully it was fresh water and not salt water we were swimming in! What would you do differently?: I eneded up 14th out of 27 in my age group coming out of the water so I was right on 'middle of the pack'. I need to learn to relax in the water and to find my comfort zone earlier. I also need to learn to draft. I tend to want to get away from people when I am near them but I may benefit from swimming behind one of my competitors?? Transition 1
Comments: After getting out of the water we had to run up a steep hill to the transition. I fumbled a lot with my wetsuit today and had a hard time getting it off? Not sure what was going on. Also, I wore my aerohelmet today and I could not get my sunglasses once my helmet was on my head. I spent a good 20 seconds trying to get them on, then decided to just hold onto them and try getting them on again once I got going on the bike. What would you do differently?: Nothing...if the wetsuit doesn't want to come off then the wet suit doesn't want to come off! I need to relax and try not panic when that happens. Bike
Comments: I felt happy with my bike performance despite the hills. We do not get hill training down here in Wilmington so when I do a race with hills I always get nervous. I felt pretty strong on the bike and was able to pass quite a few people which was a good confidence booster. And...I had no pain in my knee!! What would you do differently?: Nothing...I felt I did my best! Transition 2
Comments: Transition two is always easier than T1. I fumbled a little bit...my bike helmet went flying when I took it off so I had to reach under the rack and get. Scott had left me a 'love note' on my towel which made my day! What would you do differently?: I need to get the 'squeeze em's' for my shoe laces. Trying to tie my shoes is always challenging b/c my hands are so shakey! Run
Comments: Wow...this had to have been one of the HARDEST 10 km's I have ever done. It was constant hills and it was VERY challenging. I felt tired on the run and intimidated by the constant hills. My overall 10km was definately not one of my best but I was ok with that b/c I knew that if I was struggling most likely everyone else was as well. I ended up with the fasted run time in my age so I was happy. What would you do differently?: Keep incorparating hill workouts into my weekly runs...lately I've been slacking! :0 Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: The HILLS Event comments: This is probably one of the most challenging race in the North Carolina Triathlon Series...or at least the most challenging of all of the ones in the series that I have done so far. The hills were constant on both the bike and the run. It was definately one that tested my overall ability. I would definately do this one again but would be more prepared next time! Scott was working the race so he had to be to the race site by 6am. Since I was starting until after 8am I stayed back at the hotel and grabbed a relaxing breakfast with Nick and Mary and rode over with them. I had my usual for breakfast: coffee and a bagel with peanut peanut butter. They had a full breakfast down in the lobby so I grabbed a yogurt as well.
I got the race site and realized I had left my Gatorade in the fridge back at the hotel plus I could find my ankle band for my timing chip. Luckily Scott had brought an extra water bottle so he was able to find water for me. I felt a little 'off' knowing I didn't have any Gatorade to take on the bike.
