Swim
Comments: Great swim. Got paired in the 2nd fastest heat. Overall male and female winners were in my heat. 3rd person was a collegiate from Johns Hopkins in for the summer... loved this group. I got pushed and kicked some butt. What would you do differently?: Absolutely nothing. Transition 1
Comments: Mastered the shoes-on-pedals thing. Great transition. What would you do differently?: Nothing at all Bike
Comments: Tried aerobars for the first time- definitely different. Need to work with them a little bit. They were also a bit loose. What would you do differently?: Probably try riding with aerobars before a race??? Wife gave them to me for birthday and surprised me- so who am I to complain? Transition 2
Comments: Did this well too. Felt some hamstring soreness off the bike, and the glutes were burning. Otherwise good- and I made sure to get some nutrition in during this Transition. What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: WTF happened here? Totally lost it in the first mile. Got some back spasms that have never happened, and some serious cramps in the erector spinae. I actually considered quitting after the first mile. Had tears in my eyes it hurt so bad. Not sure what this was all about. Worst run (hands down) I've ever had in a Tri. Just not a good pace nor was I comfortable. I am going to see a chiropractor this week- I can't believe this run happened, especially after the 1st two legs went so well. Also going to try to see my massage therapist.... need some serious help. This really sucks too because my legs felt absolutely awesome, and my feet were agile. I'm so unhappy about this. The downhills were definitely easier coming back in, but so what.. if you can't run uphill without a freaking back spasm you can't do a downhill. What would you do differently?: I don't know what happened, so I don't know how to fix it. Pain was remarkable... Post race
Warm down: Lots of water and a light run (go figure). Bagel and some pasta. Walking around. What limited your ability to perform faster: Back issues- lower back to be precise. What the hell????? This is the strongest part of my body. Going to get this figured out before Rattlesnake. Couple random thoughts~ 1) all the time in the car over the last week 2) new aerobars? 3) saddle position 4) new running shoes??? Too many changes to make. This was a tune-up for Rattlesnake and I learned a lot. Still, for spending $90 I'd like to perform to the training I did.... Event comments: Had fun. Except for my back on the run. Age Group Rank = 5/9
Packed the night before. Got up plenty early. Arrived onsite an hour before race. Everything according to plan for a change.
Lots of stretching- particularly glutes and hamstrings. LIttle time on the bike to try out my 12-hour old aerobars.
