Pre-race routine:

Had the house to myself the night before the race. My wife took the kids over to her parents house so they could sleep there and watch from their driveway. They live right on the bike course in Marlton. It was good for them and for me! :)

Woke up at 3:45. Could not sleep. Shower, food, pack the rest of the stuff in the car and left the house at about 5:15. Went to WAWA for a few things and was at the race site almost as early as the race director. Loser! LOL Oh well I wanted to be there to get a good spot and I only live about 15 mins from the race site.
Event warmup:

Got my bike area set up. Took the bike out to see how my legs felt. Rode about 10 mins and did mostly small ring spinning with the exception of a few flat sections of the course. I let it go there for a few minutes just to get my HR up and see how my legs felt.

Got my running shoes on and went for about a half mile run on a few side streets. Legs felt good but a little tired. Glad I ran a little just to keep the blood flow going.

Got the wet suit on and swam from the swim out down to the race start. Full length of the course. I did not feel good at all. I rushed putting my wetsuit on and it was way too low on me. That killed me and I just felt flat and dead while swimming. I usually have a lot more punch in my pull and kick. It was not there. Started to get a little nervous about that....

Comments:

Swim started off fast and I felt like I was in a good spot and sight line. Turns out that a really good friend's girlfriend was to the right of me and we were almost side by side for the first 200 meters. We were going pretty hard and I didn't know who it was. Now that the race is over it isn't so much of a shock this girl was an ACC Champ multiple times for Maryland and we have been in the pool together a lot. She's no joke. She also came on to the race scene last year and is already winning almost every race she enters. She's good....

So eventually at about 300 meters she dropped me and I only got a draft for about 50 meters. She gapped me pretty good in that last 100-150 meters too. LOL

Came out of the water 2nd and felt pretty good as we gapped the main field by a lot.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Swimming is taking a back seat for a while. I'm burned out and every time I go to the pool I just flop for no more than 2000 yards/meters. Enough to get me by in a race, but not enough for me to come out 1st.

Nothing special here. I got my bike and passed the race leader by the end of the first block.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster.

Comments:

I rode without speed for the first time. So I really didn't have a clue how well I was doing. Looking back I don't like doing that. I would like to know the kind of pace I am riding. It helps me gauge how I feel. But in any event it was another good exercise in using my body as a barometer.

I am in decent cycling shape but not the best I have been in. I'll admit that I rode hard for the entire course and had a few moments of doubt on the back end of the course. I think for the first time I can say that I may have popped on a race course. I blew up bad on the last hill back to transition. I had to shift into a pretty easy gear in my small ring and spin it out until my HR came back down. It was a lot longer than I would have liked. I kept waiting to hear someone pull up on me but it didn't happen.

Got back to T2 and the race director was on a bike waiting to lead me out on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Ride with speed and get more than 8-10 weeks of riding in....I really feel like if I can stay healthy, get some solid training under me I am capable of much faster bike splits. I am by no means in great shape right now. If I can drop about 15-20 lbs I think I am capable of pulling a bike avg 1-3 MPH higher than what I did today. A new challenge for me!

Comments:

First run with compression socks. I love them. The run is mixed. 9th overall is where I wound up but I surely didn't run as hard as I am capable of. Effort for the entire run was probably 9 out of 10 on the way out to the turn around and then 6 out of 10 on the way back. Apparently, I was almost 4 minutes up on the 2nd place guy into T2. I am very shocked by that. There were some really solid guys in the field.

I ran hard out to the turn around and was a bit worried. I've been in that position before. Once I made the turn and didn't see anyone for a few minutes I decided to shut it down and go into cruise mode. I just didn't want to blow and more importantly get hurt for no reason.

Finished with a smile...
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Light run for about half mile, quick swim to get the stank off my nasty self.

Event comments:

Overall a great race. Local, 15 mins from my house, solid competition and a lot of friends. What more can you ask for. In all...a good day and a pretty tough course.

It's been since June of 2008 since my last race. A few things I noticed. Mainly, the main field is creeping up. Over a year ago it was not as competitive and you knew your competition pretty well. After the run turn around the main field was a lot closer to the front. That's a great thing. It means that races will be more competitive and that you really need to bring it on race day. I like that. Winning by a few minutes is not fun. Racing guys head to head is fun!
