Pre-race routine:

Could only choke down 1/2 wheat/flax english muffin with PB and some water.
Got to race site when husband asked where my aero bottle was - ummm in the refrigerator. Thankfully this race was close and he went home to get it for me.

Event warmup:

Took some Rescue Remedy. Swam across lake.
Swim

  • 482 meters
  • 02m 47s / 100 meters
Comments:

I knew I had passed some swimmers but had no idea where I was in the pack. It was nice to pass some purple caps from the previous wave. I swam until I touched the bottom. When I looked up Merry was right in front of me so I thought I did pretty well :)
BT wife cheering me on my way to T1 :D
What would you do differently?:

Work on sighting.
Transition 1
  • 01m 48s
Comments:

No socks which helped in T1. I put on my helmet and got ready to unrack my back when some guy yelled "your helmet is on backwards" so I took it off but I had it right, he was obviously yelling at someone else. Had a hard time getting my bike off the rack because the other bikes around me were still there and I had a hard time getting my seat under the pole.
What would you do differently?:

Know that obviously my helmet is on right. Figure out how to get my seat off the pole easier. This was much better than my previous T1 times so I'm happy.

Comments:

This is my first race on the Terry Male saddle I borrowed and I think this is likely the happiest I will ever be on a saddle. Unfortunately, I have to give it back and break in a new one.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, I'm pretty happy with this ride.
Transition 2
  • 01m 48s
Comments:

I thought I would be faster than this. Shoes slipped right on - lots of vaseline but I think I took a sec to take a drink.
What would you do differently?:

Actually I would put socks on.

Comments:

Heard my husband and Trin2bfast yelling my name :) I am trying to get my stride when I realized my husband is next to me asking how I am - I love you, go away!
People ALL over the run path really pissed me off, let it go.
OMG! This run was toough. Not a surprise. I actually dreaded this run from the time I was in the lake. The thing that made it worse was I could NOT catch my breath. This has never happened to me. Maybe I am paying for my bike performance? I don't know. I decided ahead of time I was going to walk some because my interval run a while back was good. Well, I walked too much and too frequent.
Chatted with lots of runners/walkers along the way - I LOVE race people :)
The first water station at 1 mile had NO cups! I picked on up off the ground but it cost a few secs, not a huge deal.

The good news is I managed to pick up my pace in time for everyone to see how fast I was - LOL! Hearing all my buds cheering for me was awesome!

Everyone that I talked with post race said their run sucked which made me feel just a little bit better.
What would you do differently?:

Run more, walk less.
Post race
Warm down:

This was cool - lots of BTers and local tri folks at the finish - there are advantages to being slow :)
They had ice cold towels but they were out of water bottles!
Sent husband to the van to get cooler of cold beer!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Could not catch my breath, it was hot, I am slow.

Event comments:

This is my third race and my first race as an athena. I placed 2nd in athena over 40. I was shocked! You could have knocked me over with a feather. They had no preliminary results for Athenas near the finish or on the wall at the pool so I had no idea. We were moments away from leaving when I told my husband I wanted to cheer on the Athena's. A lot of my friends were still around to celebrate and pose for pics, I was beaming! The group I train with is awesome, three of us took home hardware and the other two are AMAZING athletes.

I loved this race because lots of friends were there but I have to say I don't get running out of cups, bottles, water and pizza. And what is with kicking everyone out of the pool area with no explanation?

Performance: Good
The swim went well, very little traffic, we spread out pretty quick though I did kick somebody a couple of times. I was able to freestyle the whole way (a first) but did eat some time on sighting.
Suit: Louis Garneau tri suit
Course: At first I was intimidated that it was point to point but realized quickly this is an advantage - MUCH less traffic and it's easier to go straight. 300 or so straight then a right turn for another 200 or so.

This was a good ride for me. If you look at my logs you will see that I am slow on the bike so although this is slow for most this is pretty speedy for me.
Wind: Some
Course: Fry is a long, flat road. The first 3/4 is very smooth but then it got bumpy, so much so that I thought I had a flat or something.

Course: Pavement for the first 1.2 or so then onto a trail with woods, the shade was appreciated. There was 1 hill I knew about from the clinic run with Justin. It isn't a big hill but it is steep and did piss me off. When I passed the 1 mile table on my way back I brought my own cup from the mile 2 table :) They had been replenished but the volunteers thanked us for recycling.
