Total Time = 3h 04m 47s
Overall Rank = 50/104
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 13/21
Pre-race routine:

ice shoulder twice and take 4 advil from crash on sat pre-ride. It worked.
Event warmup:

none, i never do really.
Swim
  • 24m 25s
  • 1094 yards
  • 02m 14s / 100 yards
Comments:

I did well overall. I did have a little trouble finding a good person to draft...kept trying a different person. Oh well.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 1
  • 07m 55s
Comments:

Atrocious. 7min55sec = approx 2 min run from beach to T1 (fine there) + 4 min T1 (bad, bad) + 1 min start bike + 1 min ride back to T1 to retrieve camelback.
What would you do differently?:

Lack of effort and attention. Wasted 4 min.
Bike
  • 1h 51m 33s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 6.69 mile/hr
Comments:

The climbs in the beginning I handled much better second time around (sat back and spun instead). The technical part was the most technical trail I've ever ridden. I found it real hard and it drained me. I had 2 GUs on the bike (I also had one in T1) and a camelback full of gatorade. I prob drank 48oz on the back. I passed prob 10 and was passed by 4-5. Also it was somewhat muddy.
What would you do differently?:

You need to know how to handle your machine well. Real well. I would pre-ride any xterra course and do it slow esp in downhill singletrack with limited path visibility.
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

Nice quick work. Did not want to repeat T1.
Run
  • 48m 48s
  • 4.97 miles
  • 09m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

I walked up every hill of which there were many. However, the hills were so steep that the people running up them did not put much time into me. I ran all else. I was kinda spent and for me this strategy worked (minimized my run time). Prob 10 people passed me and I of course passed nobody.
What would you do differently?:

Bring more endurance.
Post race
Warm down:

Long Trail Ale. Oh yeah.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lack of skill and endurance. bad T1. Overall I think I did well in my first xterra. I'll have more endurance for next year.

Event comments:

HRM read 1765 calories (I did not put on the chest strap until T1..so race = 1765+swim). xterra stoaked is not for wousses like myself. That is why I loved it. Back next year. Would like it if more people did xterras.

Course: 2 loops 10K. First part was up, up and more up. Many walked it. Soon after it got technical for 2 miles, real technical. Many walked it. Last mile is downhill incl one nice dropoff (at speed) where you land in mud, lots of mud. Then repeat for second loop. There were a couple sections I thought were risky. I injured my shoulder in a crash on the sat pre-ride which I attribute to course as much as rider.

Course: 2x loops of hilly 4k on some road, some dirt road, some trail, some field. I'd say just 1k of that loop was flat. The coolest was the field: approx 0.5mi where the route was mowed into a field (to yard height from field height). When you enter the field, you can see everyone 0- 0.5mi ahead of you and when you exit the field, you can see everyone 0- 0.5 mi behind you. Real nice route.
