Swim
Comments: My first run-in start, and busiest. Took some time to get some space to get into a good rhythm, after rounding the first buoy (which was pretty darn crowded on the inside). But I was able to draft a few times. Varied off course just a bit once. Felt like I had a really nice rhythm coming in back to the beach, I'm guessing it was the current that helped. What would you do differently?: Get in the front (vs. 2nd row) on the start, work on breathing every 3rd stroke. Transition 1
Comments: Well, I guess my transition times continue to surprise me in comparison to the field... seems to be my best "event". ha. I've finally figured out how to place the leash in the velcro of the neck of the wetsuit so I can undo it easier - thank heavens! I had a quick "oh shoot" moment when I realized at the rack that all my other tris this year had wetsuit strippers and I hadn't practiced getting it off my legs. But fortunately it came right off. I was a little nervous as well when I saw the bike course started w/ an immediate uphill, but I was able to get my shoe clipped in quickly. avg HR 178/max 181 What would you do differently?: I guess it's time to start thinking about doing the bike shoes on the pedals thing. whoa. Bike
Comments: Nice course, but definitely busy w/ lots of riders not at all staying to the right, making it difficult to pass at times, and frustrating to have to hit the brakes a few times. All the "novice swimmers" were in front, so there were plenty of people to try to pass. I think I certainly have room for improvement on my bike fitness... been slacking quite a bit. And I suck at cornering. Never know what speed to take turns at. Speaking of which - my bike computer didn't work, that kinda stunk, but I just kept telling myself to go as fast as I could. What would you do differently?: more bike training for the future, but nothing for this race. Transition 2
Comments: I think I came practically to a full stop to dismount... and then I nearly fell while running w/ the bike and trying to hit the lap button on my watch. oops. otherwise good. HR 183 avg What would you do differently?: again, work on keeping the shoes on the bike and a "flying" dismount. Run
Comments: Felt really slow off the bike, but feel like I was able to really pick up the pace as I went along. I finished the 1st loop at 13 minutes...so I must have. It was hot in the sun... tried to stay in the shade and take water to dump on my head. Felt close to puking a couple times, so I think I must have been pushing to max effort. :) or maybe it was just the sun. What would you do differently?: more bricks and runs at threshold. Post race
Warm down: drinking water and walking around. What limited your ability to perform faster: I think I did as well as I could have w/ my training and w/ the busy bike course. I came in nearly 5' under my goal of 1:30, so I was pleased. (though my original goal at the beginning of the season was 1:25) Event comments: A very well run race, esp for inaugural event! I wonder if having the swim novices start last instead of first would help clear up the bike course a bit. The spectators were terrific. Beautiful course. Great, smooth roads on the bike. Arrived (too) early, worried about parking. Had a wheat bagel w/ pb (instead of my usual waffles), which I liked, coffee. Registered and set up transition, then had some time to hang out w/ Julie and the pup - went down to the beach to check out the swim course. Had a bag of honey stinger chews 15' before swim.
For some reason, I blew off a warm-up. I had plenty of time, so in retrospect this was dumb. I was going to do a swim, but by the time I was getting in the water, they were calling for everyone out... though people stayed in for a good 15' plus after that and I certainly could have done some swimming. Next time.
