Swim
Comments: I was really looking forward to this swim because the lake is crystal claer and calm. Thought it would be a great swim, but it was a challenge because of all the traffic. Got kicked in the eye right off the bat and then, once I finally found my stroke, got kicked again and had my goggles slip off. Not great. Finally got moving in a rhythm about halfway through, but it was too late at that point to make up for all the time I lost trying to find my way in the first leg. What would you do differently?: Start further out on the side of the pack. Transition 1
Comments: Transition area was really crowded and the style of the bike storage -- slotted bins rather than bars, which was new to me -- so I wasted some time figuring out where I left everything, etc. Not an awful transition, just could have been faster. What would you do differently?: Not a whole lot. Just needed some experience with the different set up. Bike
Comments: I pushed myself pretty hard on this one. Hammered it on the climbs and didn't let up on the downhills. This was where I saw the big difference between starting in the first wave vs. the final wave. Passing was a challenge, which really made me ride harder -- which was a lot of fun. It all paid off as I hit 20 mph average for the first time, something I had started to give up on as a goal for this year. What would you do differently?: Not a whole lot. I think my offseason training will pay off in terms of additional speed and better climbs. Transition 2
Comments: Overall a fine transition, though I lost some time fumbling with my stinking shoe. Not going to stress over it as I knew these sneakers were on their last legs and I've been just keeping them going through the end of the season. What would you do differently?: Was tempted to throw my shoe in the lake. Glad I didn't do that. Run
Comments: First mile was a challenge. Had a hard time getting my HR down after the bike and the long climb didn't help much. Turned in a 9 minute mile, which had me on pace to miss my goal of breaking 1:30. Decided to just let it rip for the rest and managed to beat another goal I didn't think would happen -- breaking 24min/8min mile on the last leg. Beat it by 1 second. I was really happy about that. What would you do differently?: Learn to drink during the run. Harder than it sounds ... for me. Post race
Warm down: Texted my wife. Walked around. Poured water on my head. Saw my times. Smiled. Ate a bagel. Looked at the times again. Had some truly awful recovery drink. Ate a banana. Packed my bike. Called the family. Drove home. Event comments: Beautiful course. Challenging where it needed to be. Very well organized. Seems like they're about at capacity in terms of participants given the tight transition area and congestion on the roads. Great race. Last updated: 2009-08-10 12:00 AM

Age Group Rank = 158/337
Woke up much earlier than my body is accustomed, but was ready to roll so it was fine. Downed a banana and some water, packed up my gear and was off to the site. Got there early, which was great because the transition area was packed by race time. Every open inch of space was taken. Focused on hitting my goal of finishing in under 1:30 (previous times 1:40 and 1:33)
Basic stretching, nothing too big. Splashed around in the water a bit to get readyfor the swim. This was my first time going in the first wave, which had its ups and downs.
