Swim
Comments: Navigation was spot-on. No issues. I thought I was going out too hard after the first 150 yards, but I worked into it and held the pace pretty well. I did not wear a wetsuit, the water was really warm and the race was so short. I thought about using the wetsuit just to go through the motions as prep for future races, but I think I saved time by not going with the wetsuit. What would you do differently?: Being a sprint course, it was really hard for me to settle down and think about form and pace. I think next time I will try to settle down a bit more and think about form. A swim warm-up would have really helped. Transition 1
Comments: Not bad considering that I was at the end of a dead-end aisle. I was all set to try the shoes-clipped-in mount, but didn't see anyone else going that route. The exit fom transition was close, so I decided to get my shoes on on the towel. Worked great. I was able to jump on the bike and hammer without spending time screwing around with my shoes on the bike. What would you do differently?: Use a form fitting tri-top that I can swim in. I put on a jersey during this transition. It wasn't a problem, but it was one more step that isn't necessary. Bike
Comments: I could/should be able to really improve this segment. I will continue to work on it. I have a bike racing background and should be able to get a top ten in my age group on the bike. The ride itself went fairly well. I was really happy with my aero position. What would you do differently?: Problem area... hills! Not really any climbing on this course, but when I was at my limit, any little rise was just killing me and my pace. I need to work on that in training. Transition 2
Comments: Not bad. Everything went well. Seemed faster than 1:10, but then I was at the end of an aisle. Run
Comments: UUUUGGGHHH! That bike to run is really tough. The first 1/4 mile was ugly. I though for sure my calf was going to cramp. Fortunatly, I ran through it and felt much better after the first 1/2 mile. What would you do differently?: Push the pace more. I settled in way too much. Just like on the bike, the small hills just crushed my pace. I have got to work on that in training. Post race
Warm down: None really. What limited your ability to perform faster: The very small hills were enough to really put the hurt on my pace in both the run and bike. I really have to work more hills into my training. Event comments: I enjoyed the race. I will do this again. The organization could have been a LOT better. Tough job, so I will not be too hard on them. To many needless lines to wait in. Here are the lines I had to wait in on race morning... Packet Pickup, Timing Chip, T-Shirt, Swim Cap, Transition entry... these were all seperate lines and the transition entry was really, really long. Some people had to wait in this one line for 25 minutes! I understand that race directors always want you to pick-up your packet the day before... but am I really supposed to drive an hour to the race site, pick-up my packet, turn around and drive an hour back home... then do it all over again on race day? Not for a small race like this. Overall, the race was fun and I actually wish there were more small, less costly events like this one. Last updated: 2009-08-11 12:00 AM

Alarm at 4:30am. Ate lightly on the drive in.
Waiting in about 5 different lines really cut into my warm-up time. I ran for about 20 minutes to warm-up. I wanted to swim a bit, but I elected not to... I did not want to get out and have to stand around in the cool air waiting for my wave to go.
