Pre-race routine:

Packed up the night before so set the alarm for 3:45 and threw on my clothes and out the door by 4:00. Had an hour and a half drive to the park and wanted to be there at 5:30 for packet pick up. Around 4:45 saw lightning in the distance and came upon the storm. Drove in and out of it but knew it was headed toward the race site. Mentally started to prepare for no swim.
Event warmup:

Pulled in as the rain was light so quickly got packet and sat in car as rain got heavier and reviewed goodie bag. More folks started to show up and started setting up transition in rain so figured bike was going to get wet any ways so set it up. Got word of swim cancellation so back to car and texted family that I'd arrived safely and no swim. Unpacked swim gear from bag and waited for it to get lighter. Had plenty of time to take a walk on the beach, take a picture of the waves, take bike out to set up my shoes in the clips, jog a bit to loosen legs, get all info about how they were making it a duathlon and mentally run through transition tasks. I was very relaxed.

Comments:

Could see I was at end of pack but since I hadn't trained with a run/bike/run, didn't want to push it too much at first. Didn't feel the need to hydrate. My time was spot on for a normal 5K run only, so I felt good about it being my normal pace.
What would you do differently?:

I need to run faster - find a way to push it without fear of meltdown. I'm steady, but obviously slow. Not happy just now when I saw the results and realized I ranked 121 out of 137 folks on this first run. Not happy at all. I felt like I had an overall good run, but in reality, I'm a turtle.
Transition 1
  • 00m 54s
Comments:

There had been a large purple kiddy swimming pool full of water at the end of my bike row that the event organizers put for us to wash our feet from the swim but it had been taken away during our run and it took me an extra couple seconds to find my row.
What would you do differently?:

NEVER, NEVER make my marker something that is movable. Pick a tree, count the rows - something. I won't make that mistake again.

Comments:

Felt strong on the bike. I passed a bunch of folks on the flat areas of the course. Knew nothing about the route, so followed the arrows and policemen at the intersections. I was passed by a few folks on the steep hills. The major downhill was the scene of a bad bike accident that must've happened a couple minutes before me getting there and caused me to be quite shaken at the sight of it. Could hear the ambulance heading there, so I moved on. Prayed for the athletes involved. Had a 5 track railroad crossing that was very jarring but managed to cross without falling. Finished strong.
What would you do differently?:

Need to do more hill work. Going UP hills, that is.
Transition 2
  • 00m 49s
Comments:

I almost forgot to get my feet out of my shoes before I got to transition so had a moment of panic and had to be fast about it. My calf cramped up as I was putting in my left running shoe. That's never happened before so I just pushed through the pain.
What would you do differently?:

On the pre-race warm up, pick a spot at the end of the course to remember to take feet out of shoes.

Comments:

Started with a comfortable pace, but slow since I was finding my legs. Got water at each station and poured most on my head and back as it was humid. Talked to a few folks as I passed or they passed me so it was enjoyable.
What would you do differently?:

Need to push myself more on this last leg of the race. I always have energy to sprint the last bit but I need to use some of that energy to pick up the pace. If someone my age can run faster than me, then I can learn to do it, too, right? Just run faster you slowpoke.
Post race
Warm down:

Dumped the cold water that was handed to me at the finish all over my head and back. Felt good. Walked around. Went to the car but realized my keys were in transition and it wasn't open yet. Grabbed an icee but my body was craving fruit and couldn't find any. Washed off at the outdoor shower. Found bananas and apples in a bucket at the foot of the food table and downed both. Back to feeling fine.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm just confused on my slow run time in comparison to others. I know I'm old, but geez. Need to research ways to pick it up. I have to spend more time in the saddle for the bike portion to increase. Nothing holding me back but me.

Event comments:

Enjoyed the race greatly. Registered at the last moment and glad I did. Not having the full tri was disappointing in a small way but when I looked at that large body of water, I was really intimidated and figure I would've been the last one out of the water anyways. Very well organized and fun event.
