Pre-race routine:

Woke up waaayyy too early -- 3:30 and couldn't stop visualizing the bike leg. I finally gave up and grabbed breakfast around 4.

Got to the site around 7. Set up, stretched, listened to some music. Just chilled until it was time to head to the water.
Event warmup:

Swam about 100yds in the lake & then treaded water until the 'Go' signal.
Swim
  • 23m 25s
  • 1760 yards
  • 01m 20s / 100 yards
Comments:

OK -- a couple swells from some water ski boats, but a pretty calm course.
What would you do differently?:

Other than getting one of those whiz-bang tempo deals, I don't know what else I can do other than keep practicing.
Transition 1
  • 01m 45s
Comments:

Lots of pavement between the water & the transition. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.
What would you do differently?:

Not much really -- I can't get into the whole no socks thing. I may buy a full tri-suit for next season (5 sec. savings) but I'd rather get the socks on right at T1 than mess around with them at T2.
Bike
  • 1h 18m 19s
  • 24 miles
  • 18.39 mile/hr
Comments:

I liked the course, but the roads had been slurry-sealed and were a bit rough. I rode on the smooth shoulders a couple times & my speed went up 1-2mph. I'm surprised & very happy with finishing 39th - I was expecting 50th or so with this group.
What would you do differently?:

I think I paced this OK. I decided not to pursue the guys who pulled away in the last 5 miles so I could save my legs for the run. I'm happy with this decision, since I was really feeling the burn on the hill at about 2km on the run.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Not bad. I seem to be getting better at running with the bike shoes. Not up to leaving the shoes on the bike at this point - #1-they're boats (48) and tend to drag on the ground, #2 - I'm a klutz and would rather deal with the velcro & shoe situation after I rack the bike. Didn't get a time for this transition - sshhh - It happens
What would you do differently?:

put my shoes on the right side of the bars so I don't have to walk around to get to them. bad planning.
Run
  • 47m 8s
  • 6.22 miles
  • 07m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

Started out OK - remembered to keep the pace slow & get the muscles used to running. Felt the burn on the ascent around km 2 and pondered walking for a while (but the wife & kids were there, so sucked it up and kept going - thanks Bear!) grabbed water at the 2.5, 5 & 7.5km turnarounds. paused so I could actually drink it & continued on. MP3 player was allowed, so I used it. WOW - just got the split. Assume a 2min T2 time & this was a smokin' 10k for me. Couldn't be happier.
What would you do differently?:

be younger -- I mean really, I kept moving and finished the race with almost no extra energy left. Damn near perfect for where I'm at.
Post race
Warm down:

got rid of the soaked shirt & scared little children & dogs with my white, dripping skin. Walked around & grabbed some grub & water. Bailed on the HEED 'cause it's just too sugary.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

age & poor cycling skills. I've improved on the cycling - I actually rode most of the course as a training run from my house, with the caveat that I then had to ride back to my house which is near the top of 600ft high Seattle Hill.

Event comments:

I want to love it because it's so close to home. I gave it a 4 because parking wasn't as bad as I thought it might be, the swim course was average (a yellow buoy AND a yellow canoe in the same general area, come on! - not to mention the difficult footing at the boat ramp at the end) the bike course was OK - road conditions can't be blamed on the organizers, the run was good. The water at the finish, not so good. 3 containers of HEED (too sugary) and 1 of water. There were times when we had to wait for water to be brought & then they ran out of water cups and had to find a new supply. Probably normal, but I'm a newb and the few races I've been to that had plenty of water bottles at the finish didn't have this problem. After reading others' comments, revised down to a '3' - this is only my 4th tri, so my experience seems to be with marginal events - I hope to race more well-organized events next year.
