Swim
Comments: Time an approximation (forgot to start watch and there were no split times taken). Extrapolation from other splits. Got out a little fast -- without warmup, it caught up with me, lost some wind and time. Wetsuit performed great. Wave very crowded -- like a water polo scrum. Was running into people throughout race. Slowed down near end by lifeguard getting in way to help a swimmer. Overall, reasonably satisfied. What would you do differently?: Warm up before swim. Try to find steady pace sooner. Transition 1
Comments: Nothing too eventful, except forgot to put number belt on bike. What would you do differently?: Put number belt on. Bike
Comments: Flat, quick bike, on road course. Traffic on most of it was light, but course was coned off ... very secure and lots of volunteers. Fueled twice with apricots -- I like them much better than gel shots. Was really comfortable. It's not always going to be this easy. Hill work really helped with this. Bike was a breeze. What would you do differently?: Nothing really. Maybe a little more up and down work in training would make it even faster. Transition 2
Comments: Had to do some housekeeping at T2, which slowed me down. Slow getting shoes off. New laces on running shoes helped. Bike jersey was slow coming off. Could have gone much better. What would you do differently?: Running jersey on underneath bike shirt (will have to experiment). Leave bike housekeeping for after race. Run
Comments: Goal to run the whole course was met. No walking, even up hills. Kept pretty consistent pace overall. Up and down hills helped -- some speed made up on downslopes. Bike was so easy that I wasn't too leg weary. Lots of volunteers along the path ... very encouraging. What would you do differently?: Train harder on sprints to reduce time. I think I can make some progress on the run Post race
Warm down: Walked around for 10 min. one bottle Gatorade, slice of melon, clif bar. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not enough swim training. Event comments: Over 1,000 people racing made things pretty hairy, causing late start (by 10 min). Lots of very encouraging volunteers and workers. Very positive atmosphere, and large crowd of athletes meant large cheering crowd at finish. Transition area very centrally located, meaning not a lot of time getting from swim to bike or bike to run. Large crowd made for cramped transition area. Overall, an enjoyable experience. I used it as a brick workout, and it served that purpose well. Last updated: 2009-08-15 12:00 AM
