Swim
Comments: This was the coldest water I have had to race in ever. It was really hard to catch my breath before the start and we had to stand in the water for about 5 minutes before our wave was sent off. When the horn finally went off, I just sprinted because I knew that the harder I swam, the faster I would warm up. I was surprised by all the skilled swimmers at this race. I did an okay job drafting and I did not get held up too badly by traffic from the first wave. My arms were completely numb and stiff. It was hard to breathe at times because my chest was constricting. I was happy when I finally made it out of the water. What would you do differently?: Get a long sleeve wetsuit. Transition 1
Comments: I was so tired from the swim, I decided to take it easy in T1 to catch my breath. I guess I shouldn't have gone out so hard, but swimming is my best event so why not? I decided that my long sleeved training top would not be enough on the bike so I put on my fleece jacket as well. I am very happy with this decision because I was able to warm up quickly on the bike but was not overheated and this helped me to ultimately have a pleasant run. What would you do differently?: Nothing really I guess. Bike
Comments: This was a great course. The hills were challenging but not killer. After I warmed up a bit after the swim, I enjoyed the ride. What would you do differently?: Train more. Transition 2
Comments: Just racked my bike and headed out. What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: I felt really good during the run. It is probably the best I have ever felt at a race. The course was beautiful. I pretty much followed one woman who was going a good pace for me the entire course. Unfortunately, I tripped and fell on a tree root about 200 yards from the finish. I got up and finished strong but I bruised up my knee and hip pretty badly. I am pretty pleased with my time. I haven't gone this fast in a race before. I know I still need to work on the run more. What would you do differently?: Train more and not fall. Post race
Warm down: I sat down next to the lake and stretched. The fall kind of knocked the wind out of me and my chest was tight so I just tried to calm down and relax. The post race food was excellent. They provided a nice selection. I ate a teriyake chicken breast, salad, bread, grapes, cookies, and strawberry shortcake. I was impressed. What limited your ability to perform faster: Bike and run. Need more practice. Event comments: I liked this race and will do it again. Last updated: 2005-09-12 12:00 AM

I drove over to the race site at 6 am. Ate a Fruit and Nut bar and sat in the car and listened to music for a little while as people started to show up. The air was crisp and I was glad that I remembered to bring my parka. I walked over to the packet pickup area and picked up my stuff then went back to the car to unload my gear. I set up my transition area and sat down next to the lake and watched people warm up. The race started about 15 minutes late because the line was so long for packet pickup. I was glad that I came early because I did not have to wait at all. Finally, they announced they were going to start.
Stretching and sitting around waiting. Trying to keep warm.
