Swim
Comments: I was in Wave 5 (women only) with my group, the Jersey Shore Tri Gals. I stayed towards the back of the wave at the start which was a big mistake as I found myself completely boxed in by 4 breast strokers. They couldn't have boxed me in more completely if they had planned it that way. I was getting frog-kicked from both sides and I had absolutely nowhere to go. I tried getting past the woman in front of me only to have more breast strokers on both sides of her. I didn't see a single person swimming free-style in the back of the pack where I was. I rounded the buoy and tried to get inside next to the line only to find someone pulling themselves along the line. I never broke away from my breast-stroking pack. I gave up and just started treading water and waiting them out until I could get some clear space to swim. What would you do differently?: Not start at the back of the pack. Not try to stick close to the line. Maybe go very wide from the buoy and line to try and get some space without breast-strokers. Transition 1
Comments: Transition wasn't too bad. I could move faster but saw no reason to as I was treating this whole thing as a training workout. I had a chip and the splits seem to have registered until the run. What would you do differently?: Move faster. Bike
Comments: The bike loop was great, a little traffic to contend with and some rougher roads but overall, not bad. Lots of clueless bikers on the course which wasn't unexpected as it's a beginner tri but I took it easy and tried to ride really safe, especially around corners. What would you do differently?: Spin my last mile. I didn't even think of this and I really burned my legs out powering the last mile or so. It really killed my run. Transition 2
Comments: This is where the chip timing must have gone off because there is no time for my run and there is no way my transition was less than a minute. Overall, I moved fairly quickly. What would you do differently?: I want to ride & run with my camelbak next time. I dropped my water bottle while trying to hydrate on the bike and had a spare in my transition area. I ended up running holding the bottle so I'd rather have a camelbak. Run
Comments: I barely ran at all as my legs were fried and stiff from the bike. Plus, I haven't been running at all this summer. I need to start running asap. I couldn't even motivate myself to walk quickly so it was mostly a stroll enjoying the ocean views and talking to other non-race participants who were also strolling the Long Branch boardwalk. What would you do differently?: RUN! Post race
Warm down: Nothing really as my entire "run" was a warm-down. What limited your ability to perform faster: No training for the run. Starting at the back of the swim wave behind breast-strokers. Event comments: I love this race! It's so laid-back. A little late on the start but overall, a wonderful race!!! Last updated: 2009-08-17 12:00 AM

Wasn't sure I was going to do this even though I had signed up and paid to enter a couple of days before the race. I woke up at 5a, woke my sister (whose idea this was) and decided I'd at least do the swim and see what happened after that. I love early morning swims, especially in the ocean, and figured I could always bail on the bike and the run. I didn't eat anything (bad move) as I was too busy getting my stuff together for my 2nd sprint tri ever and my first tri in 3 years.
Got transition set up, ate a piece of my sister's cliff bar, tried to hydrate (was out the night before drinking wine) and headed down to the beach to get wet. I absolutely loved the laid-back feel of the crowd. It used to be an untimed race so the participants were all acting like it was a training day. I was too as I was totally, completely unprepared :)
