Swim
Comments: It was low tide so many actually walked for quite a ways... I chose to swim and try to get into a rythm and it worked. This was my best swim yet at this distance, by far. Not a great placement but for me...a huge victory. What would you do differently?: Still need to remember to swimg wide around buoys...got wacked on both buoys by other swimmers. Transition 1
Comments: Much much better transition due in most part to not being dizzy from the swim! I had a sitting stool for the first time, because I needed to dry off and apply a bandage to a nasty blood blister from Falmouth Road Race last Sunday. What I didn't realize at the time...was that I had sliced open both my feet on the rocks/shells. What would you do differently?: Ask the race director to put mats down over the bad rocks/shells you have to run over on the way out of the water. Some people had water shoes but...I'm a slow enough swimmer without that added on. Bike
Comments: We did this last year so we were ready for the 'traffic'... had one instance where I had to slow down dramatically due to being unable to get around everyone but overall it felt strong. I tried to hang in there with a guy who was clearly 'better' than me which helped but I eventually had to let him go. What would you do differently?: Next year, I need to get the right kind of bike shoe to run in or...get a shoe I can step into on the bike. This leg was also one of my fastest so far in the bike portions. Transition 2
Comments: Note above...hard to run in my bike shoes...I was a bit winded (worked extra hard on the bike) so putting on my running shoes took a bit longer than usual. I could feel my feet being sore (I have PF) so the extra pain (hacked up feet from shells) I thought were blisters. I also took too much time putting on my watch for the run... What would you do differently?: New bike shoes. Put watch on while running! Run
Comments: I instantly thought I had blisters on my feet (turned out to be gashes) which felt quite uncomfortable so I had to keep 'ignoring' that PLUS I've had PF for two months so not much run training. This was a true 'gut check' run. With all that in mind, how can I complain about the result even though slower than last year? What would you do differently?: Have to get over this PF... and talk to race director about the mats idea on the beach. Post race
Warm down: Talked with my 17 yr old son...who did great! Talked with some other competitors, some who had blood coming thru their run shoes from getting hacked up. Otherwise, just tried to cool down, find shade and get the cuts taken care of. What limited your ability to perform faster: This stupid PF...and a bit of the foot gashes. Event comments: We've done 4 FIRM races now and each went very well - with the exception of that nasty beach shell/rock action at Wild Dog. They are very efficient and their 'snacks' are above average... :) I don't know what we should expect for post-race - just quick results, awards and maybe some 'live' entertainment? We stayed in Portsmouth RI at a campground...tenting...like last year. Ate a good meal at Fieldstone's. Ate a granola bar upon waking at 5:30AM, and drank 20 oz of Perpetuem.
Checked in, racked and swam for 10 minutes and then stretched out. No time for any bike and my feet (PF) don't need any more aggravation...sadly.
