Age Group Rank = 5/14
Pre-race routine:

Ate my standard oatmeal, 1 muscle milk shake and started sipping the gatorade. Left by myself so the rest of my familly could sleep in a little.
Event warmup:

Swam a bit maybe 200-300 yards. Just tried to go threw and visualize the race and what I wanted to accomplish.
Swim
  • 27m 20s
  • 1760 yards
  • 01m 33s / 100 yards
Comments:

Deep water start floating off the boat launch dock. Set out feeling good and smooth. Nothing special on the way out other than a set of really big waves from a nearby boat that caught me of guard(THEY MAY HAVE BEEN SMALL BUT THE FELT LARGE DUE THE LAKE BEING SO CALM TO THIS POINT) Maybey about 500 yards to the first bouy I was all by myself and found out that I was swimming to the wrong bouy. This sucked, for some reason I did not see the first bouy at the point and was swimming to the second bouy. I corrected course and got back on track but I really had a problem sighting this course for some reason and felt like I left a couple minutes out in the water due to it. Oh well not much I could do just swam smooth and tried to pick up the pace the last 500-600 yards to make up for my poor navigation. This is the first time this has happend to me. I know everyone had to swim the same course, but I feel the course was poorly marked, and the kayaks resembled bouys with the sun coming up on the way back. I need more time in the water to swim more aggressively from start to finish.
What would you do differently?:

Better sighting and go for it. I'm still a little scared of the distance. I know I can swim it. I now need to RACE IT!!!!!

Comments:

Bike course was fun. As I hit the hills I cuold feel the soreness in my legs from my training from the week. I think a taper would have improved my bike split a little. How much, who knows. I rode the course with someone else in my age group. Was nice as we moved up in position and past a lot of riders. I did not like riding the same course as the sprint tri. We ended up riding maybe 6 mi with people riding at a slower pace and was riding almost on the yellow line to try to make it saftely past them. Riding up the last hill it was strange to see participants pushing their bikes up the hill. Overall I felt good and had fun.
What would you do differently?:

Taper a little more.
Transition 2
  • 00m 39s
Comments:

This was a little quicker for me.
What would you do differently?:

Nada
Run
  • 41m 54s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 06m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

Nothing to special here. Felt good coming off the bike and ran strong the whole way. Walked 2 water stations just because I cant seem to get any liquid down while running. Lots of sprint participants on the course so I had a hard time racing with anyone around me. Just did not know what race they were in. Had a good run and a PR 10k for a Tri. I thought the course may have been short. Just did not feel like I was running 6:40 min. miles. But hey lets hope it was accurate.
What would you do differently?:

Nada, just need more fitness
Post race
Warm down:

Chilled, ate some food, and drink. Walked around talked with everyone and then headed back down to the lake for a swim with the kids. Good times.

Event comments:

Course was good. I would like to to see the race promotor put some more money back into the particpants.I dont care to much about swag or giveaways, I would like to see more bouys for the swim course, milage markers on the run for the people still running with a watch for splits, and more volunteers (some water stations only had 1 person). She was doing a great job but overwhelmed by all the demands of hundreds of fatigued people. Will do this race again since its so close to home and had a great time but I feel Chelanman has become my standard of a great Tri- and would like to see more follow thier lead. Overall had a great time and hope BUDU is @ Lake Stevens next year.
