Pre-race routine:

Wake up before the roosters and try to eat enough.
Event warmup:

Putting a wetsuit on is warm up enough.
Swim
  • 28m 17s
  • 1760 yards
  • 01m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

Hey its a mile swim and that is always hard however cannot complain with 28m17s. Just had to keep on keeping on.
What would you do differently?:

Mentally I could have been a little stronger...concentrate on stroke technique.
Transition 1
  • 06m 9s
Comments:

Did the old cap and googles in wetsuit arm trick coming out of water. Then shoes on which were stashed just after beach for gravel road 1/4 mile (uphill, mostly) run. 3 min to T1 and 3 min in T1. I put on cycling gloves on run up the hill...good trick. Took 1st GU in T1. Then socks, shoes, helmet, bike shirt. Then run over grass and the gravel driveway to mount on road (not allowed to mount prior to road).
What would you do differently?:

Think: quicker! quicker! quicker!
Bike
  • 1h 13m 59s
  • 23.8 miles
  • 19.30 mile/hr
Comments:

I did have a heck of a pace, 23.2 mph, until mile 15. Miles 15 and 16 are uphill (not killer but kills your ave pace). Took a look over the shoulder on that hill at one point and there was a long line of triathletes! After that I hurt. Actually I was hurtin a bit beforehand as I never rode the aero posn for that distance (I have clip ons which I recommend for this race - used them for half the distance at least)...hurt in the lower back and you also sit on a different more forward part of your...uh..kiester...and with no chamois in the shorts. Anyhow, I actually was hoping for more hills just to sit up. And there were some in the last mile or two which were short but stung a little esp the last one I had to come out of the saddle.
What would you do differently?:

practice aero posn more and increase training rides over 30 miles (I know, I know).
Transition 2
  • 02m 8s
Comments:

I was spent and walked the bike from road to T2 half the distance...not real cool. Forgot I had yet to cross the timers pad, so I added 30s to my bike due to walking instead of running with the bike. Made good time in T2 thou.
Run
  • 54m 12s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

It was humid! Forecast had called for 90+%. It did not matter much, I was spent. Had to walk a fair amount in first half mile (to recover from the bike) and also in the last mile (when I should be kicking it in) cuz I was just spent. Overall I'm cool with it since I hung tough when I was hurtin...what I call being in survival mode (as opposed to race mode).
What would you do differently?:

Next year I need to run more. 2x or 3x/wk is not gonna cut it.
Post race
Warm down:

what is a warm down? I drank water and poured more over my head.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lack of endurance. and I listen to the hurt in the body instead of ignoring it and going even harder like a caveman. Also have to comment, some of the women there just smoked that course (and me)...very impressive.

Event comments:

My first road tri this year and first olympic this year. I had a 2;30-2:45 projected window and I hit the back end of it so I'm ok with it all. Next year, work on my weakness and come back for a faster time and lower number in the place column.

Course: beach start, then clockwise around several huge orange buoys in a crystal clear clean pond (West Hill Pond). Don't try to run on the left from beach (to shorten the swim by 40 ft), you'll fall over the submerged rocks which you cannot see. I and others did.

Course: Nice roads. The first 15 miles are predominantly flat or false flat downhills and its aero posn almost the whole time. Miles 15 and 16 are uphill but not steep. More short sharp hills towards the end (when I was dying). It is so awesome to be aero on a modest downhill and crank out over 40mph..zoom! Excellent traffic control from volunteers and police. THanks!
