Swim
Comments: I wasn't DFL! OK, so I was 6th from last - but that's not last. I actually managed to take off 2 min from my pool time! I knew I was gonna be slow. Thank goodness I practiced sighting - it really helped (although I'm sure my navigation was not nearly as good as others). I made it through without grabbing a buoy or kayak, and only flipped on my back twice. That was an accomplishment in and of itself! What would you do differently?: besides for starting training earlier in the year, I don't really know. I felt I performed very well for someone who couldn't freestyle the length of a pool 2 months ago! Transition 1
Comments: This was my big transition - I changed into everything I planned on wearing for the rest of the race. They raised my bike seat at check in on Sat. I didn't practice getting on the new height, so when I got to the mounting area, I tried to jump on, missed, scraped up my knee on the gears (didn't notice this until after the run), and tried again. What would you do differently?: practice getting on the bike. Maybe run instead of walk. Bike
Comments: the course was VERY hilly. I had practiced hills, so I passed up a lot of people going up hill, but a lot passed me on the downhill/flats. I figured not too bad for, again, a newbie biker on a hybrid... My goal was 1hr 20 min, so this was the only part of the tri that I didn't reach my goal on. (however, most of my training rides were only 10-11 mph anyways, so it really wasn't that bad) What would you do differently?: more practice. not much else can be done. Transition 2
Comments: I rocked this one - 62nd place! But all I did was rack my bike, helmet off, hat on, grab a gatorade and go. What would you do differently?: nothing! Run
Comments: it was a good course, hilly, but again, I had practiced hills. I stopped once to drink, once to eat some energy gels, and once 'cause I was tired, but ran most of it. My goal was under 12 min/mile, and I just barely made it! I felt good - tired, but good. Unfortunately, I drank/ate too much, and my stomach was pretty upset. I pushed myself pretty hard - to the verge of being sick (but not quite over the limit). My boyfriend was really cute - he ran along the sidelines with me for the last 20-ish yards, and got my entire finish (including them calling my name over the speaker system) on video :) What would you do differently?: not eat/drink quite so much. Post race
Warm down: walk, stretch, eat What limited your ability to perform faster: first time, too short training (was only serious for about 2 months). However, my goal was 3 hours, and I came in just under that time! I was proud of myself :-D. Event comments: this was a fantastic race. Very well organized, and the volunteers were great! I'm very glad I chose it as my first race. My two complaints were 1) the water smelled like poop - I can't explain it, it just did. and 2) it took me like 10 min to find the food tent after the race, it was up, behind a hill. I wish it was more accessible. Other than those two - I would not have changed a single thing about the race. The location, weather, and staff were all amazing! Last updated: 2009-08-24 12:00 AM

wake up at 3:30 - go in search of food. I forgot to buy some the night before, but I *thought* the grocery store was 24hrs. It wasn't. Ended up grabbing something at 7-Eleven, great choice - I know. Drove up to Columbia, MD (about an hour drive), go set up transition, and normal pre-race stuff (I guess - I more or less just pretended to know what was going on)
I didn't do much - jumped around a bit, but mostly just tried to calm my nerves
