Run
Comments: Figured I would be one of the slower runners so lined up at the back at the start. Went out a little fast (first mile was in 8:00 minutes). By the turn-around, I found my pace. What would you do differently?: Just try to go out a little slower and maintain a more consistent pace (or a negative split). Probably just my inexperience and pre-race jitters. Transition 1
Comments: Executed my plan of stretching and drinking my gatorade water mix for about 0:45 before starting the transition. Had a good run out of the transition area but a little trouble getting on the bike (not a very good push off) and a LOT of trouble getting into my toe cages. What would you do differently?: Probably a deficency in my training, usually get on the bike while I balance against something (car or house). Need to stop this and always mount from a running start. Bike
Comments: Since there are virtually no hills to ride on at home had a lot of trouble on some of the climbs (especially when there was a head wind). On the first lap, had difficulty deciding what gear to use on the climbs and descents. Did much better on the second lap. What would you do differently?: Nothing on race day. Somehow have to find a way to ride hills as part of my regular training. Transition 2
Comments: Dismounted very well. No calf cramps which is a problem that I occasionaly have. While running, missed the opening to the transition area and had to back track a little bit. Had planned on stretching and drinking for two minutes but was feeling quite good so I decided to cut that short. What would you do differently?: Be more observant as to where the opening to the transition area is. Run
Comments: This run went exactly as I wanted. Started out very slow and began picking up the pace after the first half mile. At the turn around grabbed a little water and was feeling good so I decided to go harder. Passed three people on the second half of the run. What would you do differently?: Nothing. With my current level of training I don't think I could have done any better. Post race
Warm down: Walked around and stretched, grabbed quite a bit of water right away. After about twenty mintues, felt like eating and grabbed some of the carmel apple pieces that they had along with another harvest bar. What limited your ability to perform faster: This was my first multi-sport ever and I think it went very well. In the offseason, really need to work on building a bigger base and cycling strength. Event comments: Was looking for some gatorade or bananas right away. Could not find them. Some bananas and apples appeared about an hour after I was done. Probably need to bring my own bananas and/or some more gatorade next time (drank all mine out on the course). Last updated: 2005-09-15 12:00 AM

Got up about 5:00, drank two pints of water. Loaded bike and rest of my gear into the truck. Ate breakfast around 5:30; two cups of coffee, pint of water, and three pieces of toast with almond butter. Left for race a little after 6:00 and drank two more pints of water on the way. Got to race a little after 8:00, registered and racked bike. Brandy (my wife) got her volunteer assignement (she worked the bike transition with a bull horn telling people to walk their bikes in/out and wear their helmets). For about an hour, just walked around talked to a few people and checked out the way cool bikes people had. Probably drank too much water since I had to use the bathroom multiple times before the race.
Ate a harvest bar about 9:00, started warming up around 9:15. Jogged VERY slowly about 5 mintues, did about 15 mintues of stretching (mainly hamstrings and calves). Ran about 5-8 more minutes at a faster pace and did some more stretching. Attended pre-race meeting at 9:45.
