Swim
Comments: Worked hard to focus and not get distracted by other swimmers. Read an article by Master's swimmer about using a "mantra" to keep a pace. I Repeated the chorus from "In the Deep" by Bird York over and over and over.... Didn't stop when I bonked into other swimmers. I ran them over instead of getting run over. Learned that lesson during the dress rehearsal. What would you do differently?: Push it a little more! It's a race! Transition 1
Comments: Baby powder in the rolled up socks was great. Ran out of transition around a bunch of people walking. Shoe-bees on laces helpful. Sat on my bucket to put shoes on. Squirty bottle full of water got grass off feet instantly. What would you do differently?: Try bike shoes and clips next time. Might help me get up the hills. Bike
Comments: Thought my tires seemed flat-ish and became obsessed with this notion. Had just learned to change my tube day before racking and thought maybe I had pinched it and had a slow leak. It was all my imagination. Really screwed with me, though. Mt. Albert hill was harder than in practice. That whole neighborhood segment was, actually. What would you do differently?: Push it! Your tires are not flat, you're just not going fast enough! Transition 2
Comments: Aaaaaah! I lost my hair tie in transition!! What would you do differently?: Put an extra hair tie on my visor strap in case of this emergency. Run
Comments: Muuuuch harder than in practice. Calf cramps 30 seconds in. Stretching helped that. Had to walk up a lot of the hills, and I swore I wouldn't. Cramp under the ribs last 1/4 mile was truly wicked. The water stations/volunteers were very energetic and appreciated. I've done the swim then run and I've done the bike then run. Something about all three together made my body cry out for mercy. What would you do differently?: Run more in training. Never been my strong suit, but gotta run more, plain and simple. Stash extra hair tie! Post race
Warm down: Walking, water, oreos! What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of run training. Lost my hair tie! Event comments: Great race. Awesome vibe--all girls. Tons of volunteers. Lots of swag in the goodie bags (k-swiss shirt, sock guy socks, coupons, yummies). Lots of porta potties. Not a lot of spots along the course for family to watch, but if they set up chairs near transition, at least they'll be comfortable for a couple hours. Last updated: 2009-08-26 12:00 AM
