Swim
Comments: Oh my good God. What a cluster! My first snake swim. I timed myself over and over again, carefully making sure not to put an incorrect time, lest I screw up someone else's race. Well, I learned my lesson. There were people seeded 30 people in front of me wearing nose plugs. Yes, nose plugs. I said 8 minutes, and there must've been 25 of us, so they just seeded us alphabetically. At the very least, I'll put 7:59 next year. Or better yet, 5 minutes. And some folks just don't like to let you pass them. What would you do differently?: Seed myself with a speedier time! Transition 1
Comments: Nice short distance between pool and transition area. I was lucky to be on the end. Of course, since you are racked by your swim seed time, all six of you hit the rack for your bike at the same time. Sort of weird. Bike
Comments: This is truly what I would call "rolling" hills. I was never in my small ring, lowest gear, or "one-one" as I like to call it. It was a fun ride! My first real ride back on my white Trek since a bad accident last summer, so the fact that I had no fear was a big milestone for me. The volunteers were completely outstanding. So much encouragement and enthusiasm. All male (nice touch) and they each seemed like they could've been a brother, father, husband to myself or a pal, they were that cool to us girls. What would you do differently?: Take in more liquid because once I hit the run, I can't drink or I'll urp. Transition 2
Comments: Biked in the same shoes, so not much to do here but put on my visor. What would you do differently?: Take off sunglasses here. I got so sweaty on the run that they just slid around, plus in the shady parts of the run it was sort of dark. Run
Comments: Running's just not my thing. I did better here than I'd hoped, though. It was very hot. I felt bad for the girls whose swim seed times were toward the end, because every minute they waited to start the race was a minute it got hotter and hotter into their run. What would you do differently?: Lose the shades. Train more. Lots more. Oh, and lose 30 lbs., that might help. Post race
Warm down: Misting tent, icey-cold Pink Power soaked towels, and oreos! (In fact, I downed a whole Powerade and then 5 oreos and then felt pretty sick. I think I sugar shocked my confused body). What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of run training. Event comments: Great event. Inaugural year. I highly recommend it, especially for first timers, like me. Lots of love, not a whole lot of gritty competition. Cute t-shirts and towels (although the large t-shirt isn't) and a nice area, once you get past the traffic on 95 South. Woke up at hotel. Banana and cheerios we'd bought at the store the night before.
Swam a few laps to try the flip turn-under-the-lane-rope maneuver.
