Swim
Comments: This was only my fourth tri, so I earned a lot of "Goods" relative to my others. I was quickly comfortable in the water, the navigation was easier, I finished in the top 1/3, and I drafted the first half. What would you do differently?: I know I can generate more swimming power. I've been focusing on getting comfortable and improving my form, but I have more power to deliver. Transition 1
Comments: The transition was good, but not great. I was talking to a peer and I could have been focusing on my own stuff. It was a fairly long run from the T1 to the pavement. What would you do differently?: Don't talk. Maybe not wear socks (although they barely slow me down). Eventually, get tri bike shoes and learn to jump on the bike. Bike
Comments: I rode hard (for me). I passed three and was passed by three. I was chasing someone in my age group and he pulled away on a seriously aero bike. My back really killed me (I was in my road bike's drops rather than bars). I couldn't have gone faster without more training, more flexibility, and/or a more aero bike. What would you do differently?: Get more aero! Transition 2
Comments: My T2 wasn't timed. I think the time is in the bike ride, and was probably about 1'15" What would you do differently?: I put my Garmin 305 on upside down. This probably cost me 15 seconds, although having it definitely pushed me on the run (I was trying to be under 7 minute miles, and was running 7:21s). Run
Comments: I ran hard trying to break 7 minutes, but after the bike and with the heat, 7:21s were the best I could do. I drank one swallow of water every mile, and poured a cup on my head. On the second lap, I got a side-ache but got rid of it by pressing on the cramp-spot. The last lap felt fastest. The entire rate I tried to run mid-sole and increase cadence, but I was hurting. I did pass my AG peer on lap 2-1/2 to take first place. What would you do differently?: Practice more? Post race
Warm down: No cool down. Ate food. What limited your ability to perform faster: More training. More training in the afternoon. Event comments: It was good, but rather small. Although I placed first in my AG, the overall field had fewer novices than the last there tris I've done (including the last which was also USAT). I don't think beginners drive all the way up there. As a result, I placed lower overall but held my own in my AG. Last updated: 2009-08-27 12:00 AM

It was strange starting a tri at 5 pm AND in near-90F temperatures! I puttered around the house, ate, took a nap, etc. Nothing felt normal.
I swam for about 10 minutes before the gun.
