Pre-race routine:

My first Triathlon. My training involved mostly reading posts at slowtwitch.com at work and wishing I had more time to train.
Event warmup:

Set my bike up on the rack and wandered around, spending way too much time waiting on line for the bathroom. Also was suprised to see someone with a 1/2 gallon carton of soy milk next to their bike. I spent a fair amount of time wondering how on earth someone could drink that in the middle of a race. Later found out it was filled with water to wash his feet off after the swim.
Swim
  • 14m
  • 547 yards
  • 02m 34s / 100 yards
Comments:

I decided to let the majority of people go ahead, since this was my frist Tri and first mass start for any swim. Plan worked well, except I was swimming faster than most and found myself in the middle to top 1/3 by 200 meters. At that point, I felt great about my swimming. That feeling was replaced by pure pain when I rolled to my right to breath and got kicked in the side by someone doing the breast stroke. I got the wind knocked out of me had trouble breathing for a while. I struggled with the last 250-300 meters.
What would you do differently?:

kill all breast strokers. and not wait for the pack to go before I start.
Transition 1
  • 02m 30s
Comments:

I managed to land the "flying leap of faith" onto the bike, which suprised the heck out of me. I guess it was the adrenaline or something.

Bike
  • 40m
  • 12.43 miles
  • 18.64 mile/hr
Comments:

I was still a little out of breath from the kick in the water at first, but had a decent ride. I didn't push as hard as I could since I wanted to save something for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster
Transition 2
  • 01m 20s
Comments:

no problems
Run
  • 31m
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

The first 500 meters was great since my legs were numb. That was replaced by the searing pain of my calves siezing up into two knots of useless meat. I slowed my pace and eventually the pain receded.

I began to feel pretty good, and started to wonder where the turn around sign was. I think someone was moving it further away. I eventually caught up to it and headed back.

And that's when my quads made their presence known with blinding, searing pain. That stayed with me until the finish. I managed to break into a (relative) sprint at the finish
What would you do differently?:

Much more run training. Especially bike-run bricks
Post race
Warm down:

The post race towel soaked in ice water felt amazing. I walked around for a while, rehydrating and had a banana.

I went to the massage tent and tried not to scream out as the masseusse tore open the knots in my calves

What limited your ability to perform faster:

weakness of body and spirit.

Event comments:

To sum up:
Train more.
Kill breast strokers
