Swim
Comments: I felt like this was a very good swim for me, so I am hoping the course was a wee bit long. I got a strong start since I didn't have to deal with the mass of people from the traditional wave start. I was able to maintain what felt like a good pace and grabbed a few feet to draft off of both on the way out and on the way back. Swam until my hand touched the ground, and then up and out. What would you do differently?: I'm a little awkward getting up from the swim. I need to get up and out of the water more smoothly. Transition 1
Comments: I had covered my shoes and stuff with my towel, so it wasn't too wet. I felt a bit slow and discombobulated, but managed to get out in fairly good time (for me). What would you do differently?: I just need to practice transitions. I never do. Bike
Comments: I had decided to do this race as hard as I could. As hard as I could up the hills was not very fast. I think maybe my legs were still fried from Augusta a couple of weeks ago. On the other hand, when it was flat or down, I rode as fast as I dared. The rain and resulting wet surface had me sitting up and slowing for all the turns. I passed quite a few people. And then went back and forth with this hilarious 60 year-old dude who kept yelling at me (and the others around him) to go faster, pass him, keep up with him, whatever. I got ahead of him at one point, and he yelled at me to hammer it down the hill over the next 1/3 mile. I yelled back, "Yes, coach!" Transition 2
Comments: A little wobbly getting my running shoes on. Run
Comments: I was breathing hard and I'm sure my HR was up when I came off the bike, so I expected the start of the run to be painful. But, no. I felt pretty good. I held back just a bit for the first few minutes, but then started pushing and pushed it all the way to the end. Again, I passed quite a few folks. And I knew a lady in my age group wasn't far behind. I wanted to make sure she didn't pass me. What would you do differently?: I actually think I could have run harder. Post race
Warm down: Another trip to the porta-pot. What limited your ability to perform faster: Rain and generally wet conditions. Little bit of lingering tiredness from Augusta. Event comments: Very, very nice little race at the end of the season. The course is really pretty. The race is well organized. The awards are beautiful. Because the first 3 ladies in my age group moved up to the overall and masters' categories, I ended up first in my age group! I was totally psyched. And I got one of the beautiful awards. It was up early, early to drive the nearly 2 hours it took to get to the race site in Hattiesburg. Had some coffee, ate a yogurt, sipped some water. Tried not to go back to sleep on the ride down.
Does jogging to the porta-pot count? Otherwise, none really.
